Oscars bosses 'condemn' Will Smith's slap on Chris Rock and launch 'formal' review

The Oscars bosses have announced they will be launching a formal investigation after Will Smith hit Chris Rock during the event on Sunday.

The Hollywood star found himself irritated when Chris made a swipe at Jada’s “GI Jane” style hair, causing the Men In Black actor to jump onto the stage before slapping Rock.

Will’s husband Jada suffers from alopecia but it is unclear as to whether Chris knew about this when he made the joke

Jada looked speechless when Chris made the comment about the role that Demi Moore had famously made the decision to shave her hair off for.

Now, The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has said they will be looking into the event that has left the world gobsmacked.

In a statement, they said: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

Following Chris’ comments, Will walked onto the stage, slapped the presenter and went back to his seat, shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

Despite being slapped, Chris made light of the situation and said that the incident “was the greatest night in history”.

Hours after the incident on Sunday, they said: “The Academy does not condone violence of any form.”

Will has since addressed the incident, issuing a formal apology to The Academy during his acceptance speech, saying: “I want to apologise to the academy and I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees.

“Love will make you do crazy things.”

It comes after bosses were said to be in crisis talks as to whether they would strip Will of his Best Actor trophy following the incident.

Sources told The Sun: “Behind the scenes, they went into full crisis mode.

“Once the ceremony was over, they called in key members to hold an emergency meeting about what action they should take.

“There have been calls to have Will stripped of his Best Actor gong.

“They cannot be seen to be condoning violence in any way and there are some people in the Academy who believe they should remove the award from him to make a point.”
