BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay reveals rare detail about family life in social media chat

BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay took a step away from the norm this week as he revealed a rare detail about his family life.

The presenter, who this week is standing in for Dan Walker, tends to keep his cards close to his chest when it comes to his private life – and little is known about Jon away from the programme.

But during a chat with his co-star Nina Warhurst – who replaced Sally Nugent on Wednesday (March 30) – it emerged that Jon actually has teenage children.

The pair were reading through the papers of the day when Nina pointed to an article on social media, which revealed that plenty of young people have fake social media accounts to fool their parents.

And she was quick to admit the news was “frightening”, beginning: “I like this story, and I’m frightened of it. So ‘Children fake social media to fool family’,” she read aloud.

Nina revealed that a whopping two thirds of children “maintain several social media accounts”, with a third “keeping an account purely to show their parents when using a second one to communicate with friends”.

She then turned to Jon for his opinion, adding: “It’s frightening if you have young kids, or teenage kids as you have, but in the same way – isn’t it great that teenagers do and always will outwit their parents?”

Jon clearly knew what she was talking about, having teens of his own, as he agreed: “They’ll find a way around it.”

He went on: “So if your children want to be your friend on Facebook – don’t believe them!”

But Nina quickly corrected him: “They don’t use Facebook!”

Before joining the BBC, Jon grew up in Cheshire and attended the Devon-based University of Exeter.

Jon has revealed some details about his personal life before on social media, but he tends to keep it work oriented – but fans will know that he is married and has children.

And it might surprise some viewers to know that Jon and his wife Francesca Kasteliz were actually co-stars, as she is a former journalist and BBC News correspondent.

Francesca now works as a TV coach, aiding people with how best to come across on camera.

The pair met in the Bristol newsroom on the job and finally tied the knot in 1998, and now share three children together – but despite their fame, Jon still keeps their life together on the down-low.

However, he couldn’t resist sharing the struggle of working from home when the country was in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown early in 2021.

Taking to Twitter, Jon shared: “Filing a radio report while contending with kids shouting, wife on the phone, washing machine whirring, doorbell ringing, postman delivering, dog barking, builders banging, school playground next door!”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
