Tom Parker was 'always up for banter' and 'relished every second of being in a boyband'

When I was the Daily Star music columnist I published The Wanted’s first interview, partied with them at the MTV Video Music Awards in LA and appeared as an extra in their Lightening video.

In their hotel bar after the opening night of their first tour in Manchester Tom confided to me – over a beer – he had met someone special but management didn’t want him to have a girlfriend.

As Tom lamented fears he would break her heart, playing Cilla I warned groupies would throw themselves thick and fast but if he thought this girl was “the one” he should pursue things.

Fast forward to now and that girl is his grieving wife Kelsey, mum to their beautiful children Aurelia and Bodhi.

For a feature I once spent the day being the band’s personal assistant and we mocked up a picture of me giving Tom a massage – he was always up for banter, relishing every second of being in a boyband.

Watching The Wanted’s recent 02 Arena gig I wiped away a tear hearing Tom’s bandmates singing without him, but his strength in fighting cancer to the end will never be forgotten and I’m glad he came into my life.

This comes after Tom’s wife Kelsey and bandmates addressed the loss of the singer.

Sharing the heartbreaking news, Tom’s wife Kelsey said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we confirm Tom passed away peacefully earlier today with all of his family by his side.

“Our hearts are broken, Tom was the centre of our world and we can’t imagine life without his infectious smile and energetic presence of him.

“We are truly thankful for the outpouring of love and support and ask that we all unite to ensure Tom’s light continues to shine for his beautiful children.

Thank you to everyone who has supported him in his care throughout, he fought until the very end. I’m forever proud of you.”

The Wanted’s Siva Kaneswaran posted: “Hey Tom, I hope you’re having a blast up there. I am so grateful that I had a chance to witness your true courage.
