Dan Walker's BBC Breakfast replacement teased as co-star offers his job to Strictly star

BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent is already eyeing up a replacement for co-star Dan Walker.

The 45-year-old presenter has confirmed he’s leaving the show later this year to join Channel 5 News.

He was back on our screens on Tuesday (April 5) morning to wake up the nation alongside Sally.

As usual, the pair spoke to Morning Live host Gethin Jones and stand-in presenter AJ Odudu to find out what’s coming up on the programme.

After they finished reeling off what viewers can expect, Dan asked: “AJ, forgive me for asking but have you done Morning Live before?”

Dan’s Strictly co-star AJ replied: “Yeah at Christmas. You don’t recognise me Dan because I was on my sparkly crutches back then.”

Sally didn’t waste no time in asking AJ if she fancied joining her on BBC Breakfast.

She said: “Well AJ, if you like it can I tell you there’s a vacancy right here on this red sofa.”

A shocked Dan joked: “Steady on, I haven’t gone yet.

Gethin added: “Dan, we’re going to miss you. How long have you got left?”

Dan replied: “I can’t say. I’m in discussions about this Gethin. Don’t ask me awkward questions on air. Why do you fancy a move?”

After the video link ended between the two shows, Sally joked: “I could audition people couldn’t I? Maybe there’s an app for that.”

However, Dan reminded Sally: “I’ve got at least a few weeks left before.”

Dan will replace Sian Williams as the Channel 5 News anchor, who recently announced she was leaving.

She also made the move across from the BBC Breakfast sofa to Channel 5 in 2016. Walker began working on BBC Breakfast the same year.

Dan replaced Bill Turnbull and shared the sofa with Louise Minchin until her departure in September 2021, who was replaced by Sally.

In a video shared on Twitter on Monday (April 4), he said it was a “massive decision” to leave the BBC but said: “I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often.”

He added: “I’m really excited but this has also been a massive decision for me because I love BBC Breakfast, I love working alongside Sally and I love the team there.

“But Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans and I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often and I can’t wait.

“And what an honour to step into the shoes of Sian Williams.
