Coronation Street newcomer Jon Spear could be lying about his identity as he whisks Emma Brooker off to Australia.
Emma and Jon connected at the funeral for his grandfather Ted, whose death involved Emma and Faye after they hit him with a car during a driving lesson.
They soon got swept into a whirlwind romance, with Jon eventually asking Emma to move to Australia with him – a proposal she quickly accepted, and wasted no time at all in jumping on a plane.
However, eagle-eyed fans have now spotted a sign he could be lying about who he is after spotting an eerie clue in Speed Daal, where he met up with Steve and Tracy for an interrogation.
Steve demanded to see some ID from Jon, suspicious he could be lying about his identity after Emma’s mix-up with Curtis’ lies. But, despite the fact he was jetting off to Australia later that day, he failed to produce a passport – and could instead only offer a library card or gym membership.
Both of which would be easy to fake.
Taking to Reddit, one suspicious fan wrote: “Something unnecessarily suspicious about Jon on Friday.
“Now, I don’t think there is a plot involving Jon being dodgy as he met Emma by chance HOWEVER…
“When Steve and Tracey were quizzing him, he offered I.D in the form of a Library Card or Gym Membership. Two non photo forms of ID that, I imagine, would be easier to falsify than most. Why didn’t he offer his passport?
“He must have had it to hand as he was on his way to Australia. It was unnecessarily shifty to have him offer questionable I.D. Even a bank card or social media would have been a better option.”
Someone else agreed: “Yeah same here, I’m always looking out for the next Geoff. For a while I thought Curtis was heading that way seeing as he did a pretty good of manipulating Emma.”
However, others weren’t so sure – especially as actress Alexandra Mardell has officially quit her role as Emma in the ITV soap.
One fan followed up: “I guess that’s suspicious but since the actress is really leaving I doubt they’ll pursue this storyline any further.”
“A library card or gym membership is just to tell us he’s a ‘good guy’,” someone else theorised.
And another social media user said: “The writers wouldn’t ever do something so subtle. It’s all either face-value or they make it blatantly obvious when something’s wrong.”
It comes after viewers were sure Jon was “lovebombing” Emma – a form of psychological abuse which attempts to influence someone by demonstrations of affection.
Speaking about their whirlwind romance, one fan said: “I thought Jon was sweet at first but last night he was too full on. I think the word is ‘lovebombing’.”
As another said: “They’ve only been together a few weeks ‘n Jon, wants Emma, to move in with him, IN ANOTHER COUNTRY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD! I don’t know, eh…”
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
