BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty replaced hours after Carol Kirkwood confirms 'new job'

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty was nowhere to be seen this week, after being replaced by stand-in host Rachel Burden.

Rachel could be seen alongside regular presenter Charlie Stayt on the red sofa on Thursday (April 14), while Naga has been conspicuously absent from the show for more than a week.

Last week, Rachel was in line to take Naga’s place, with the star once again missing.

So far she hasn’t spoken out about her absence, with her last Twitter post being to congratulate her BBC co-star on his new job as Political Editor.

Chris Mason was announced as the formal replacement for Laura Kuenssberg yesterday.

It comes just weeks after her co-star Dan Walker quit the show for good in favour of a new job with rival network Channel 5, announcing: “Hello, Dan Walker here. I have a little bit of news for you. In the next few weeks, I’m going to be leaving BBC Breakfast and moving to 5 News and to Channel 5.

“I’m really excited but this has also been a massive decision for me because I love BBC Breakfast. I love working alongside Sally and I love the team there, but Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans, and I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often and I can’t wait.”

His presenting pal Louise Minchin also quit the show last year, before appearing on ITV’s reality show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

And the news of Naga’s absence comes as weather presenter Carol Kirkwood sparked outrage in the studio on Wednesday (April 13) as it was confirmed she would also be appearing on BBC’s Morning Live with Kym Marsh and Gethin Jones.

The BBC cut to a live link with the Morning Live studio to see what was coming up on the programme, with Corrie star Kym confirming: “We could be in for a treat with the weather this Bank Holiday, fingers crossed! Legendary weather presenter Carol Kirkwood tells us why temperatures are set to be hotter than Majorca, thanks to some Saharan gusts!”

But Sally and Jon clearly weren’t chuffed to see their beloved co-star appearing on another programme, as Sally snapped: “Hands off Carol Kirkwood, she’s ours! What’s she doing on Morning Live?”

Jon interjected: “She’s moonlighting! Carol! We’ll hear from Carol in a few minutes with the weather…”

Thankfully, it appears Carol isn’t going anywhere fast – as she was simply appearing as a meteorological guest on the morning show.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
