Alison Hammond was “so slated” for “not respecting royalty” after yelling at Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.
This Morning host Alison, 47, admitted she got in “so much trouble” for the move after yelling at the Suits star at her first royal outing with Prince Harry back in 2017 to mark World AIDS Day.
She confessed all to her ITV colleague Lorraine Kelly, admitting she was “genuinely excited” at the time to chat to Meghan.
Lorraine began the conversation by saying: “I love that about you, you know that thing where Meghan waved at you when you were shouting at her – not shouting at her…” she corrected herself.
But Alison seemed happy to talk about it as she interjected: “Oh God, I got so slated for that you know?
“I got in so much trouble, so many people were saying that I didn’t respect royalty at the time. I was like, ‘Oh my God’.”
She admitted that the excitement of the situation got to her, continuing: “You know what it was? I got genuinely excited in that moment.
“Everyone was willing me on and I remember hearing Ruth [Langford’s] voice in my ears saying, ‘Go on Alison, get in there!’
“So I got really excited and really involved!”
But the situation thankfully ended in a rather touching moment, as Lorraine reminded Alison: “[Meghan] turned around, smiled at you, and said hi!”
“She did, she did,” Alison agreed.
In the original 2017 clip, Alison can be heard yelling Prince Harry’s name, before Ruth urged: “Go on Alison, go for it.”
With Alison yelling: “Harry!”, Ruth gently reminded her: “It’s Prince Harry, Alison.”
“Harry, come and get warmed up by me!” Alison can then be heard urging the Duke of Sussex – but Harry didn’t seem keen on commenting, and actively dodged Alison’s microphone.
“Shout [Meghan],” Ruth went on to urge from alongside Eamonn Holmes in the studio, as Alison repeatedly yelled: “Megs!” before bursting into laughter.
“Megs, you look beautiful today,” Alison managed through her giggles. “You may have seen me with Harrison Ford, I know all the showbiz… Alison Hammond, Vanity Fair!”
She added: “Meghan, we wanna have some love from you!” – and urged the crowd on her side of the street to chorus Meghan’s name to convince her to turn around.
