Phil Daniels swapped famous Quadrophenia scooter for coat – and lost a fortune

Film star Phil Daniels turned down the offer of his scooter from Quadrophenia.

And he’s kicking himself as the bike sold went on to sell for £36,000 – when it was only worth £200 at the time.

The 63-year-old former EastEnders star was asked if he wanted the mirror-laden Lambretta Li 150 he rode in the classic 1979 flick about teenage rebellion.

Instead, he chose a smart Crombie coat as a souvenir.

Phil said the director, Franc Roddam, offered to buy him the 1967 “Jimmy Scooter” – named after his character James “Jimmy” Cooper.

The actor, who was Kevin Wicks in Albert Square, revealed: “When I finished Quadrophenia, the director said, ‘I’ll buy you a present’.

“‘Would you like your scooter from the film? The guy’s willing to sell it for £200’.”

“I said, ‘No, it’s his.’

Five years ago it sold for £36,000. I got a suede Crombie coat instead.”

The 1967 scooter sold for £36,000 at an auction at Bonhams.

In 2015 Daniels was reunited with the iconic Lambretta which featured in the movie. It was to mark the release of ‘Our Generation’, a compilation album of 75 Mod classics, ahead of Mod Week

It still had its 10 mirrors, twin head lamps, leopard skin spare wheel and fox-tail ariel.

But Phil’s no mug – he once earned a fortune for doing a voice-over for a bank.

He said: “The most lucrative thing I did was a voice-over for a bank, five or six years ago, and I only had to say the bank’s name.

“I got £20,000 for that. Took me 10 minutes.”
