Countryfile's Julia Bradbury says breasts 'look like plasticine' after mastectomy

Julia Bradbury has opened up about her devastating battle with breast cancer and how she struggled to examine her “bruised, battered and horribly damaged” body after surgery.

Countryfile star Julia found out she had breast cancer in September 2021 and just weeks later underwent a double mastectomy.

The 51-year-old said that she had been able to have an implant and keep her own nipple and feels “lucky and grateful”.

However, Julia admitted that she found it really hard to look at her breasts after the op and it took her a few weeks to do so.

But, braver still, she has agreed to do it on film for an upcoming documentary.

She said: “It was always a career no, getting my breasts out on television, but here I go. I looked at it in the bedroom in my wardrobe mirror and – I don’t want to upset my surgeon, because he has done a brilliant job – it looked like a plasticine boob.

“That was eight weeks post-mastectomy. Several weeks later, my mum looked again and said ‘Jules, it is beautiful,’ and I realised how far I had come.”

Julia, a mum-of-three, also told You magazine that she had “micro invasions” meaning that the cancer has a higher than average chance of returning.

She continued: “I’m in the top five or six per cent of women in the country in terms of the likelihood of recurrence. That puts me in the ‘moderate risk’ category – higher than the average woman – but, look, it’s about percentages and perspectives.”

Julia Bradbury: Breast Cancer and Me will air later this month.

Last month she took to Instagram to promote Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and shared an update on her cancer battle.

She said: “To everyone on a cancer journey right now… I know it’s difficult. I know the ups and downs of every appointment and every day can be tough, but we humans are resilient and there is some amazing support out there for us all.”
