Love Island's Theo Campbell opens up on aftermath after freak accident blinded one eye

Love Island’s Theo Campbell has detailed the devastating effects of a freak accident which left him permanently partially blind in one eye.

In 2019, the reality TV star, 30, was on holiday in Ibiza when a champagne cork went flying into his eye – which has now left forever-lasting effects.

When talking about his upcoming Celeb MMA fight exclusively to the Daily Star, he said: “The only fighting experience I have is fighting on the streets – nothing professional, so it will be my first official fight.

“The odds are in my favour even though I have the disadvantage of being partially blind in one eye, it hasn’t hindered me too much in training as I’ve learnt how to adapt and focus on one eye.”

Theo is now fighting fit but left partially blind forever

Talking about the effects of the incident, Theo added: “The damage is done already so there is no way it will magically heal up.

“My injury was laceration and a dent, the second it happened it is the exact same now, even though there was a big laceration, they managed to save my eye which is a blessing but in terms of seeing fully again, the surgery options weren’t great.”

He has struggled with this recovery over the past couple of years

Explaining his options in more detail, he added: “Over time, like 15 years, when I needed another surgery it was highly likely I would go completely blind. So, I had the choice of going completely blind in 20 years or partially forever.

“It was very sad and hard to get over but you know the world keeps spinning. Unfortunately, I was one of those unlucky people.”

The Love Islander also explained what the hardest part of his recovery was, and said: “I’ve got ongoing eye pain and twitters which is always on my mind. But the initial first part of getting used to everything in daily life picking up objects and putting toothpaste on my toothbrush, everything was hard to judge.

The star has remained positive despite the lasting effects

“Driving at night was really hard and took me ages to adapt because the glare from the headlights was really bright.”

Looking on the bright side, Theo said: “Even though it’s there with me 24/7 it’s not getting in my way as I’ve learned how to live with it.

“I could cry about it and feel sorry for myself every single day but I keep it moving.”

He concluded: “I’m a bit jumpier especially when people pop champagne but I’ve got the attitude where some surfers get bitten by a shark and then get back in the water.”
