ABBA lose out on Eurovision's most streamed song of all time to Dutch singer

It’s official: ABBA’s Waterloo has lost out on the most-streamed Eurovision song of all time to Dutch singer Duncan Laurence.

RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage revealed during Radio 2’s Eurovision: The Official All-Time Most-Streamed that the legendary Swedish group’s classic track, which won them the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest – held in Brighton – is in second place.

Laurence’s ballad Arcade won the competition in 2019, securing a first Eurovision title since 1975 for The Netherlands.

Think About Things by Dadi Freyr, which was to be Iceland’s 2020 entry before the event was cancelled due to the pandemic, came third.

It had been considered one of the favourites to win before the cancellation but then became a viral hit through TikTok.

The group represented Iceland the following year with the song 10 Years, finishing in fourth place.

The 2021 Eurovision winners – Italian rock band Maneskin – came in fifth for their hit track Zitti E Buoni.

After two COVID-cancelled years, the much-anticipated 66th edition of the competition will soon be here.

Two semi-finals will happen across May 10 and 12, followed by the grand final in Turin, Italy, on Saturday May 14.

Radio 2’s list was compiled by the Official Charts Company using UK-only official audio and video streaming data from platforms.

TikTok star Sam Ryder will represent the UK at this year’s competition, performing the track Space Man.

Ryder found fame covering songs on TikTok during lockdown and currently has 12 million followers, making him the most-followed UK music artist on the platform, according to the BBC.

The UK’s hopes rest on Sam Ryder this year

A new documentary debuting on the BBC YouTube channel on May 10, titled Sam Ryder: From TikTok To Eurovision, will go behind the scenes following his journey to Eurovision.

Strictly Come Dancing star AJ Odudu has been announced as the UK’s spokesperson for the event, meaning she’ll deliver the UK’s douze points to the rest of the world. This will be done from Salford for the first time.

Much-loved Eurovision host Graham Norton returns to provide the commentary on BBC One during the grand final.

Radio 2’s Eurovision: The Official All-Time Most-Streamed is available on BBC Sounds from today (Saturday April 30) and will also be broadcast on Eurovision Super Saturday on Radio 2 on Saturday May 14.
