Lorraine Kelly has slammed Prince Harry over reports that he and his wife Meghan Markle may not be on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, due to his commitments with a polo team in California.
Harry is set to play for the Los Padres Polo team on the same weekend as the UK’s special June bank holiday, which runs from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5.
On the Lorraine show earlier today (Thursday, May 5), royal expert Russell Myers said: “When we saw him at the Invictus Games interviewed by an American journalist, he was saying he didn’t necessarily know if he was going to come because of security issues and other things, he put it.”
“So what does this mean? Those [family] rifts still exist. We’ve been talking about them for so long.
“And, certainly the family and the palace were left dumbfounded when he was speaking about the Queen’s security and making sure she had the right people in place around her.
“One of the tournaments is over the June bank holiday which would put into chaos his plans to come over.”
“Well indeed, there’s no Concorde anymore,” Lorraine replied.
“It’s a niche sport, it’s fair to say. I don’t think anybody would be upset if he missed it for such an occasion. Surely?”
Russell agreed: “Yes, there are some things that are more important. It’s the Queen’s wish all of the family do get together and put their differences aside.”
It is not currently known whether Harry has shared his plans with the palace.
The news of his potential absence comes after it was confirmed by Buckingham Palace that other members of the Royal Family will stand in for the Queen when the traditional garden parties return this summer.
The Queen, who is 96 and has mobility problems, has cut back on several engagements in recent months.
More than 30,000 people are usually invited each year to Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
The first garden party of the season is set to take place next Wednesday at Buckingham Palace, with others following on May 18 and 25.
A Palace spokesman said details of which royals would attend would be confirmed later.
