BBC Breakfast bosses 'already found' Dan Walker's replacement as Jon Kay set to step in

Dan Walker’s replacement on BBC Breakfast looks almost set in stone, as odds are that BBC bosses have “already found” the right man for the job.

Rumours have been flying about who could step in for Dan when he makes the move to Channel 5 on Tuesday, May 17, after an incredible stint at the BBC.

Fans have been throwing names into the ring – from Carol Kirkwood to Victoria Derbyshire.

However, it seems their dreams won’t quite be coming true just yet, as it likely won’t be a woman stepping in to fill Dan’s shoes.

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Dan initially announced the news he was quitting on social media, explaining: “Hello, Dan Walker here. I have a little bit of news for you. In the next few weeks, I’m going to be leaving BBC Breakfast and moving to 5 News and to Channel 5.

Dan is leaving the BBC this week

“I’m really excited but this has also been a massive decision for me because I love BBC Breakfast. I love working alongside Sally and I love the team there, but Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans, and I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often and I can’t wait.”

And bookies are fairly certain that BBC Breakfast star Jon Kay will take Dan’s place.

Jon regularly stands in for Dan when he’s on holiday or otherwise absent from the programme, presenting alongside the likes of Naga Munchetty and Sally Nugent.

It looks like Jon could be Dan’s permanent replacement

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It’s looking increasingly likely that BBC chiefs have found Dan Walker’s replacement, and he’s no stranger to the Breakfast family, with Jon Kay pulling away from the chasing pack.”

He added: “Gethin Jones was favourite to get the gig once upon a time but has seen his odds drift over the last few days, and it now looks as though it’s Kay’s role if he wants it.”

Also in the running are BBC star Mike Bushell at 4/1, Dan’s Strictly rival AJ Odudu at 5/1 and ITV star Laura Tobin coming in at 6/1.

Jon Kay leads them all at 1/2.

Gethin comes in at 7/2, with Jermaine Jenas following at 9/2 and Matt Baker coming in at 9/1.

Officially, bosses are still looking for Dan’s replacement, with Dan and Sally both sharing job ads on social media – and Dan warning his replacement to “look after the sofa”.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
