Lorraine Kelly swipes at politicians who 'underestimate her show' after Boris snub

Lorraine Kelly has revealed she thinks “a lot of politicians” tend to underestimate her show and newspapers like Daily Star.

But the daytime queen confessed it allows her to go in with “killer questions” which leave the Westminster buffs “taken aback”.

The iconic presenter spoke exclusively to Daily Star at the BAFTA TV Awards, where she opened up about preparing for high-profile guests, her top interview tricks, and what she thinks of politicians who underestimate her show.

The red carpet chat at the glitzy award show came right after her ITV pal Susanna Reid interviewed Boris Johnson on Good Morning Britain.

One awkward moment from the interview has since gone viral as it showed PM Boris seemed to have no idea who Lorraine Kelly was.

Susanna, 62, had been previewing Lorraine’s show which had been coming up next, to which Boris replied: “Who’s Lorraine?”

Lorraine said “a lot of politicians” tend to underestimate her show – and newspapers like Daily Star – but it means she can target them with a “killer question”.

She said: “I do think the politicians tend, not all of them, tend to underestimate newspapers like yours [Daily Star], shows like mine.

“They do, and that’s okay, they can do that, and then you can go in with a killer question and they’re sort of taken aback.”

Lorraine went on to heap praise on Susanna for her Boris interview – calling it the “perfect political interview”.

She said: “If you look for an example of a perfect political interview, it was Susanna with Boris Johnson.

“She was brilliant, so well briefed, absolutely incisive and he didn’t quite know what to do.”

The TV legend also reacted to the car-crash Boris moment, and she couldn’t resist having a giggle about it.

Lorraine told us: “Wasn’t that hilarious. Why should he know who I am? I thought it was hilarious. I thought people’s reactions were great.

“I think he looked as if he thought I was coming in. But it’s fine, he should not be watching, he should be running the country, we don’t expect him to be watching Daytime.”

Lorraine might be known as one of the most fun and friendly faces on daytime TV, but she’s not afraid of hard-hitting interviews and putting in tons of hard work.

She said: “It’s so strange, you do need to do your homework. I’m a little bit obsessed by that, I do leave things early to go and do my homework.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking to them for six minutes or six hours, you know you’ve got to put the same amount of graft in.”

The beloved broadcaster also revealed a nugget of knowledge her granny used to tell her, and how you can “disarm” people.

She added: “I think you get a lot more from people with sugar and vinegar, as my granny used to say, and you can disarm people”.
