Emmerdale Bernice star speaks out on Joe Tate return with brutal swipe at actor

Emmerdale fans have been hankering for a Joe Tate return since the hunky Ned Porteous left the ITV Dales seemingly for good in 2018.

Debbie’s partner Joe was initially feared dead, but eventually revealed to still be alive and living abroad using money from Kim Tate’s business – though his pal Graham Foster was later murdered in the woods by Pierce Harris.

Though it appears the door has been left open for Ned’s return, he has been busy living it up across the pond in the States – but recently returned to the UK.

But now it looks like fans’ dreams are about to be shattered regardless, as actress Samantha Giles – best known for playing Bernice Blackstock – has admitted she has no clue who the actor is.

Samantha appeared at the MEN Pride of Manchester Awards on May 10 to present the gong for Special Recognition, which went to James Anderson.

James founded the community interest company Depher, which provides free or heavily subsidised services to those needing plumbing and heating, free bathrooms and funeral costs, among others.

Presenting the award alongside Samantha was her Emmerdale co-star Chris Bisson (Jai Sharma) and The Chase quizzer Anne Hegerty.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star about Joe’s potential return, Samantha admitted: “Nope, I’ve got absolutely no idea what’s happening.

Fans are desperate to see Joe return

“Likewise, I know there are going to be explosive storylines for the 50th [anniversary] this year, but I have no idea because they don’t tell us anything – which is probably good! So people will just have to watch and wait and see.”

Quizzed about Ned Porteous’ return in particular, Samantha giggled as she wondered: “Is Ned the one who was…?”

When it was clarified he played Joe, she said: “I don’t think he’s coming back. I don’t think the other one [Jamie Tate] is coming back either. I know, I don’t bloody read the scripts other than my scenes, I can’t be a**ed!”

Samantha did admit that if she could bring any character back, it would be the late Val Pollard, as she admitted she has no idea why the writers decided to kill her off.

She said: “I think Val was great, she was such a fabulous character. There was no-one like her on the programme, and I think it was a mistake to kill her really, in my opinion.

“I think she should still be in it. She was amazing – why did they kill her?”
