Simon Cowell has been reunited with one of his biggest music industry success stories – The Teletubbies.
The four lovable characters, who were given a record deal from the music mogul in 1997, auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent on last night’s episode (Saturday May 28).
Reuniting for their 25th anniversary, the four brightly coloured performers – Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po – danced to hits from Beyoncé, ABBA and one of Simon’s other big acts – One Direction.
The other Britain’s Got Talent judges were instantly starstruck by the foursome’s arrival, with Amanda Holden squealing and standing up as they came onto stage, while Alesha Dixon danced along and David Walliams looked taken aback.
Declan Donnelly marvelled: “I can’t believe they’re auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent,” while a laughing Ant McPartlin added “What is going on?”
A gleeful Amanda said: “I don’t think we need to ask who you are, but who are you?”, before the quartet introduced themselves.
Before their routine began, The Teletubbies played a voice over, revealing that Simon had helped them release their song Say Eh-Oh! in 1997, which went to no.1 in the charts.
Simon proudly revealed: “Yes, I was their record label.”
Not one to usually get involved with the acts, Simon ended up on stage with the felt creatures – even giving them a hug as he wore a colourful headband they’d brought along.
The Teletubbies then circled Simon on the stage, which had been covered in rainbow confetti during the performance.
The nostalgic act received four yes’s and a standing ovation from the judges, meaning they went through to the next round.
Fans of the show took to Twitter, sharing their joy and surprise at the unexpected reunion.
“Audition of the series hilarious and brilliant. Great to have them back inner child unleashed,” said one viewer.
Another wrote: “Peak British TV is watching the teletubbies dancing to 1D on britain’s got talent”
Britain’s Got Talent continues weeknights at 8pm on ITV
