Jubilee concerts' outrageous moments – Elton John demand, 'terrifying' solo and Kermit

The Queen is the longest-serving British monarch and has become the first to reach a Platinum Jubilee.

This special occasion will be celebrated over a four-day bank holiday weekend and will see street parties taking place across the country in the monarch’s honour.

There will also be a huge pop concert live in the grounds of Buckingham Palace which will see the likes of Craig David and Nile Rodgers perform their biggest hits.

Celebrating 70 years on the throne this year, the Queen has already enjoyed several jubilee milestones that have been commemorated with spectacular events.

Here is a look back at some of the most memorable and outrageous moments.

Hula-hooping Grace Jones

Pop icon Grace Jones stole the show at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee back in 2012.

The charismatic singer, who was then 64, put the nation in a spin as she hula-hooped her way through her performance of Slave to the Rhythm.

She effortlessly swung her hips for the full four minute duration of her song.

Grace has previously said that her decision to hula-hoop came from Elton John saying he wouldn’t attend the show if she didn’t.

She took to the stage wearing a black and red leotard that showed off her long legs which she paired with an extravagant red hat.

Grace has been hula-hooping since her childhood in Jamaica and shared some advice for anybody trying to take it up.

Speaking to LA Times, she said: “Hula hooping requires hardly any movement. When people can’t hula hoop, it’s because they’re trying too hard.”

Brian May’s rooftop performance

Brian May performed at Party at the Palace, a celebration concert for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, in 2002.

It was decided that he would do something out of the ordinary to open the event, something which has since become a highlight of British music history.

The lead guitarist of Queen gave an extraordinary performance of God Save The Queen from the rooftop of Buckingham Palace.

Brian performed high above the audience and was accompanied by an orchestra below him in the palace gardens.

He has since reminisced about the performance, taking to Instagram to say: “The loneliest place in the world, playing God Save The Queen and terrified out of my wits.

“But it’s one of those times where you face the fear and you’re never quite the same again after it.”

Copycats Madness

Following in the footsteps of Brian May, Madness performed some of their classic hits from the roof of Buckingham Palace.

The 80s band turned the iconic building into their very own terraced street thanks to a very creative light show.

Madness performed hits such as Our House and It Must Be Love as streets from around the country were projected on to the front of the palace.

First, a row of terraced houses was shown with a big red bus and black taxi cab going past before it changed to a town house.

During the performance, the ska band even changed a lyric in Our House from ‘in the middle of our street’ to ‘in the middle of one’s street’.

In 2002, rock royalty met the Queen and a famous frog.

Ozzy Osbourne performed the Black Sabbath anthem Paranoid during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, with fireworks exploding around the stage after his performance.

Joining him at the event was none other than Muppet Kermit the Frog.

Kermit appeared alongside comedian Ruby Wax to host part of the show and the pair joked about how they could “borrow” the crown jewels.

Following the performances, Ozzy and Kermit joined forces to meet the Queen, a sight many thought could only be a dream.
