Love Island fans fume over public vote as show introduces format shakeup

Love Island viewers were left rather annoyed after they discovered that a new voting system was introduced that many were completely unaware of.

The brand new series of the highly anticipated dating show kicked off on ITV2 on Monday night, with many UK viewers tuning in to the show.

But unlike previous years where the contestants had some choice with who they got to couple up with, this year the couplings were in the hands of the viewers who voted which pairs they wanted to see together.

However, spectators online were clearly perplexed by the new format and began to question when the vote actually took place.

Love Island underwent a format change during the first episode

Jumping onto Twitter, fans shared their thoughts.

One person fumed: “There’s no reason why the public should have a say in how contestants couple up.”

Another questioned: “When was the public asked?”

A third said: “Can anyone identify who this magical ‘Public’ is that voted these couples together? Indiyah would like a word.”

Fans wondered who voted for the couples

While a fourth added: “The awkwardness when Laura asked each of them if they’re happy with who the public paired them up with none of them want to be in these couples.”

For many years, the women would step forward for the guy that they are interested in during the first coupling stage.

However, this has often lead to complaints when the woman is left with no one fighting to be with her.

Things can also get awkward when more than one single man wants the same girl, leaving someone coupled with another person that they wouldn’t initially chose.

Viewers were unsure about the change

Talking about the format change, voiceover Iain Stirling explained exactly how things will go down in the villa.

Talking to Christine Lampard on Lorraine, he said: “I’m never given any information ever but I’m coming at you now with a big fat exclusive.

“This year, for the first year ever, we want you guys at home to play cupid. You will have your say on which boy couples up with which girl.”

“It’s a fantastic poll where you get to decide who’s getting coupled up with who.

“You get to look at all the Islanders, get a vibe, see who you think suits to who – or maybe who doesn’t suit to who.

“Then put them together and then we can watch the fireworks fly.”
