Corrie’s Drew Spellman star now – music career, Lynx ad fame and real romance

Coronation Street has had its fair share of heartbreak and health battles – and one such came in the loss of Summer Spellman’s adoptive dad Drew.

Drew was vicar Billy Mayhew’s ex-boyfriend, who found out he had multiple tumours in his lungs and brain in 2017 – and only had months to live.

Drew was desperate to test Todd and Billy’s relationship when he first arrived on the cobbles, and later asked if they’d consider adopting Summer, before he sadly died of heart failure.

What ensued was Drew’s homophobic mum fighting for custody of Summer, with Summer eventually allowed to stay with Todd and Billy.

But where is Drew actor Tom Godwin now? From his real-life relationship to his music career, Daily Star takes a look.

Music career

Though he only appeared in nine episodes of Corrie, Tom has had an incredibly eclectic career.

Along with acting, he plays guitar in the cover band Painter’s Radio, which “deconstructs classic pop, rock and soul” songs before “putting it back together with big harmonies”.

The five-piece band have other day jobs, but have hosted a range of concerts which encourage audience participation.

In one throwback snap of the band from 2013, Tom can be seen strumming his acoustic guitar in a baggy beige shirt and jeans while obviously delighting the audience.

The star also co-ran a theatre company, before quitting to pursue acting full-time – but before that, he made his name as part of the Illusion Brothers mime act at Edinburgh Festival.

Rival soap roles

Coronation Street isn’t Tom’s only claim to Soapworld fame – he has also appeared in everything from EastEnders to Holby City.

His first television role came in 2000, when he played a charity worker in Albert Square, before he went on to play Darren Holdgate in a 2013 episode of BBC’s Doctors.

He played two different characters in medical soap Holby City – first Dave Carson in 2008, and then Sonny Lomax in 2017.

One of his most major roles came in Hollywood flick About Time alongside the likes of Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson.

Lynx ad fame

A far cry from his role as reliable dad Drew, Tom found fame way back in 2003 – aged 27 – in a Lynx TV advert, which saw him rocking out and playing air guitar to Room 5’s Make Luv.

In a noughties style blazer and baggy shirt, he had the ladies clamouring to get closer to him in the deodorant commercial.

Tom admitted he wowed at his audition by performing silly dances to stand out, explaining: “I turned up at the audition and saw a room full of chiselled hopefuls, so I had to make myself stand out from the crowd.”

He also appeared in an advert for soft drinks company Sprite, which saw him tuck into a greasy kebab alongside a CGI goblin.

Real relationship

Speaking to MailOnline about going from “geek to chic”, Tom admitted he had girls all over him after the advert aired – despite him dating literary agent Lucy at the time.

He told the publication at the time: “I can’t go out without people staring or girls chatting me up. I get gorgeous girls grinning at me, throwing their arms around me or planting smackers on my cheeks.

“My girlfriend doesn’t understand it – I’m just her tall, lanky boyfriend after all.”

Tom wasn’t her tall, lanky boyfriend for long, as the pair later tied the knot.

They share a home in south east London with their two children, Sylvan and Cai.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
