Coronation Street's real life scandals – vile outbursts, drunken behaviour and age lies

Coronation Street viewers have witnessed many scandals on the Weatherfield cobbles since the soap began in 1960.

From murders to affairs, to false accusations and jail time, many characters have been embroiled in some of the biggest scandals to have played out in the soap.

However, life away from the cobbles has been just as scandalous for some of the stars of the popular ITV programme too.

In recent years, Coronation Street has been rocked as some of its cast members have become involved in huge scandals including vile outbursts, drunken behaviour and lying about their age.

Here, Daily Star takes a look at some the stars involved in some of Coronation Street’s real life scandals.

Bruno Langley

Bruno Langley joined Coronation Street in 2001 as Eileen Grimshaw’s son Todd, becoming involved in huge storylines including scamming the residents of Weatherfield alongside Pat Phelan.

However, his time on the cobbles came to an end after accusations of sexual assault at a Manchester nightclub.

Following the accusations, Bruno’s contract was terminated, with an ITV spokesperson saying: “Bruno Langley is no longer contracted to Coronation Street.”

The actor later pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault at Manchester Magistrates Court, and was given a 12 month community order, 12 weeks on an electronically monitored curfew and 40 days of rehabilitation.

He was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for five years.

Bruce Jones

Bruce Jones played soap icon Les Battersby in Coronation Street.

However, the actor was sacked in 2007 after he was accused of making insulting comments about the soap on a night out.

It is also reported that he got drunk and and spilled Coronation Street plotlines to undercover reporters, although this has never been confirmed.

Les Battersby was later written out of the soap in a move that saw the character leave Weatherfield to become a roadie for a tribute band.

Speaking to The Mirror, Bruce revealed that losing his job had huge impact on his life, saying: “After I lost my job, nothing went right.”

He said: “I used to try to drink depression away,” adding: “I used to be famous for being on Coronation Street. Now I’m going to be living on the street.”

Katie Redford

Sarah Platt’s daughter Bethany became a regular character on the cobbles when mum and daughter returned to Weatherfield after living abroad in Spain.

Actress Katie Redford was offered the role of 14-year old Bethany Platt, but she was sacked before she filmed any scenes, after it was revealed she had lied about her age.

ITV bosses were told that Katie was 19 years old, when in fact, the actress was 25 years old.

The truth came to light after fans discovered Katie Redford’s C.V online, with ITV bosses sacking Katie and replacing her with Lucy Fallon.

Chris Fountain

Chris Fountain rose to fame in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks as Justin Barton, before joining Coronation Street in 2013 as car mechanic Tommy Duckworth.

However, his time on the soap came to an end when a video of him dressed as a masked rapper called The Phantom, showed the star speaking obscene and offensive lyrics.

ITV bosses immediately sacked the actor, with Chris Fountain later releasing a statement apologising for his actions, saying: “I would like to sincerely apologise for any offence I have caused.

“I am deeply ashamed by the lyrics and very much regret my behaviour.”

Sacked for ‘gross misconduct’, a senior Coronation Street source told The Mirror at the time: “It was the only action we could take.

“Chris left us no choice with what he has done and this seemed to be appropriate action.”

Marc Anwar

Marc Anwar joined Coronation Street as Sharif Nazir from 2014-2016.

However, he was later sacked from the ITV soap after a series of vile and expletive tweets came to light on his private Twitter account.

The actor apologised for his language and said he felt that he had “let a lot of people down,” in an online video apology.

However, ITV branded his behaviour as “completely unacceptable” and fired him immediately.

ITV bosses released a statement soon after, which read: “We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect.”
