Glastonbury fans torn as Paul McCartney uses clip of Johnny Depp during set

Glastonbury headliner Sir Paul McCartney sparked controversy on Saturday (25 June) after he used a clip of actor Johnny Depp during one of his songs.

The singer who has now made history as the festival’s oldest ever headliner at 80 years old and during his performance fans were divided after he appeared to show solidarity with actor Johnny Depp.

He performed on the Pyramid stage over the weekend and sang some of his most popular tracks.

During one of the songs, a video of Johnny Depp played despite the recent controversy with the Amber Heard defamation trial.

Paul performed his song My Valentine and the Pirates of the Caribbean actor used sign language along with the lyrics.

The clip was part of the music video which was released in 2012 and included Black Swan star Natalie Portman.

However, in light of the recent case with his ex-wife Amber Heard, many people thought that the move was in bad taste.

Viewers at home took to Twitter to praise the move with one saying: “Happy Birthday Sir Paul, hope it was a blessed and wonderful day and thank you for supporting fellow survivor Johnny Depp.”

Another thanked the musician for the clip: “Paul McCartney played a video of Johnny Depp during his set tonight headlining Glastonbury, thank you,” and used the hashtag “Johnny Depp wins”.

Others said that they “loved to see” the two high profile A-listers in the video, but not all were impressed with the move.

One unhappy fan wrote: “I love Paul McCartney but so deeply disappointed he showed the Johnny Depp footage. It’s shameful.”

Another went so far as to say that the statement “felt like it went against everything Glastonbury stands for,” and left them feeling disappointed.

Johnny recently won a defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard after her op-ed piece was published.

Paul has also used the footage during his US Get Back tour, which took place whilst the actors were in court.

The move comes days after Amber’s lawyer claimed that the Aquaman actress couldn’t afford to pay Depp the damages awarded to him, which was $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
