Fern Britton has said sorry after sparking anger with a tweet telling No 10 and Buckingham Palace to “beware” after protestors in Sri Lanka stormed and torched the prime minister’s home.
The TV presenter, 64, weighed in following reports of unrest and protests in Sri Lanka amid its economic crisis.
Taking to Twitter, she wrote: “Sri Lankans have stormed the presidential palace in Colombo. This is the result of a shortage of water, fuel and food. Who can blame them? No 10 and Buckingham Palace beware.”

However, she has now clarified that she “didn’t mean that we should similarly storm public buildings”.
Fern’s tweet sparked a debate after she posted it on Saturday.
Some people agreed with the TV star, with one saying “well said” and another saying they had thought exactly the same thing.
But others were seriously unimpressed with her comments.
“Can’t decide if your tweet is pointless or irresponsible,” said one.
“I thought you were better than that Fern,” said another person. “Very surprised… and disappointed…”
Someone else remarked: “What an absurd comparison. Try thinking twice before tweeting.”
Fern later returned to the platform to say sorry and to explain what she had meant.
“I apologise,” she told her 115,000 followers on the site.
“I didn’t mean that we should similarly storm public buildings.”

She went on: “What I do mean is that with grim predictions of men/women/children unable to afford to eat or heat this winter, need to be tackled right now.”
Several fans said her explanation was well put.
“I knew what you meant Fern, and I expect the majority did,” one posted.
