BBC DJ and Only Connect star Chris Stuart dies as heartbroken co-stars pay tribute

Former BBC Radio 4 DJ and Only Connect star Chris Stuart has died.

Throughout his stellar career, he was coined as “one of the true greats” of British broadcasting.

The 73-year-old starred on shows such as Only Connect and he also commentated on the late Princess Diana’s funeral via radio.

Tributes have poured in for the star including from his Only Connect co-star and host Victoria Coren Michell.

Victoria gave a touching tribute to her “treasured” friend.

She said: “Everyone is devastated by the loss of Chris Stuart, our brilliant colleague.

“Joyful and lovely and wise and insightful, and a talented broadcaster himself, which listeners to Radio Wales will remember.

“Most of all he was our beloved, treasured, friend, and we’re heartbroken.”

Chris is survived by his wife, a former producer on BBC Woman’s Hour, and their four children.

The broadcaster was born in Durham and first started his career at the Western Mail in Cardiff after he graduated from New College, Oxford.

Tributes have poured in for the star

Chris became one of the first hosts of BBC Radio Wales in 1978 which was said to be “instrumental” in the channel’s success.

Paying tribute, Ms Richards said: “He was instrumental in ensuring the success of Radio Wales in its early days and became one of its defining and most recognised voices.’

He was known as one of “the greats” in broadcasting

“He could engage with any topic and find the right words for the big occasions.”

Following this, the radio star then moved to London to work on BBC Radio 2 and became a daily presenter on Radio 4.

Later on in his career, Chris set up a radio and TV production company in 1993 with his industry-pro wife Megan which was based in Cardiff.
