Brian May and Anita Dobson's marriage – affair, huge rows and Freddie Mercury jibe

They were known as the showbiz couple of the century as the rock legend and star-studded actress regularly stepped out arm-in-arm together at the biggest celebrity events.

But over the years, Queen guitarist Brian May and his loving wife Anita Dobson have gone through their fair share of struggles in full view of the public eye.

Despite the millions of eyes on them and the growing amount of pressure on them, the loving couple managed to work through their difficulties and remain together today after more than 22 years of marriage.

In 1974, Brian tied the knot to his first wife Christine Mullen, where the happy couple went on to welcome three beautiful children together.

But the loving couple separated in 1988 shortly after the passing of his bandmate and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

However, the Christine wasn’t the only woman in his life at that time, after he first met soap star Anita at a movie premiere in the heart of Beverly Hills in 1986.

And it didn’t take long before the star fell head over heels for the actress after he invited her out to one of Queen’s performances where their relationship continued to grow behind his current wife’s back.

Soon pair became inseparable, leaving the musician which quite a conundrum on his hands, which he wrote about in Queen’s hit single, I Want It All, which was reportedly inspired by his conflicting feelings about his first wife and his new relationship with Anita.

During a joint interview on Loose Women back in 2015, Anita confessed that she wasn’t proud of being “the scarlet woman” behind his wife’s back but ultimately everything worked out for the best.

The doting dad confessed: “We’ve kind of been together since 1986 – a little bit off and on but then we got married and it’s been good.”

Anita added: “There was a slight overlap, [I’m a] scarlet woman, not that I’m proud of it.”

“That’s another thing that’s sort of taboo but happens and it’s an inevitable process which everyone resists, I did, I tried to,” Brian explained.

The dynamic duo have been joined at the hip since 1986, two years before he and Christine signed their divorce papers, officially marking the end of their marriage.

Will they last?

However, not everyone in their lives supported the couple in their blossoming relationship, during his messy split with his first wife.

During their ITV appearance, Brian confessed that even his close pal Freddie didn’t believe that their partnership would last the test of time.

On the hour-long show the singer songwriter explained: “Yes Freddie [said it wouldn’t last]. He said, ‘Oh darling it’ll never last’.

When asked why he thought that about the loving couple, the musician added: “I think he thought we were both too volatile. In fact, my manager said, ‘You’re marrying an actress you must be kidding’ but somehow we’re still here.”

And they went on to prove everyone wrong as the pair remain in a love relationship with each other which has lasted for more than 36 years.

When asked what their secret to a loving marriage is, the happy couple explained that it isn’t always plain sailing and that the duo often have to work on their relationship behind closed doors.

During a 2016 interview with The Mirror, Anita explained how they continue to make things work between them after so many years.

She told the publication: “There’s no secret, it’s hard work. Even though Brian’s the love of my life and he’s absolutely adorable, it’s not easy and we have to work at it.”

In their joint TV interview with the crew at Loose Women, the blonde beauty added how they still have massive arguments together but they put the work in to keep their relationship strong.

She added: “I think things only work because you want them to work, I want to be with him so that’s the reason why we’re still together.”
