'Feisty' Kylie Minogue 'lay down the law' on Neighbours set before quitting for stardom

Harold Bishop star Ian Smith revealed the moment that he knew Kylie Minogue was going to be a star, after she ‘lay down the law’ on the Neighbours set.

Ian gushed about working with actress and pop sensation Kylie Minogue back in the eighties, as the stars make their return to the popular Australian soap for its final episodes.

Kylie first rose to fame as mechanic Charlene in Neighbours, and Ian recalled how “seasoned actors” would be left in awe of her as they watched her work.

He said: “Look, I started in 1959 as a professional. I had seen a lot of people working, but Kylie, you knew what was going to happen to Kylie straight off. You just knew it.”

The Harold Bishop star also recalled the time that he knew she was going to be a huge star, after he watched her “lay down the law” with a company on the phone while they were both backstage.

“I remember sitting in the green room one day and she was on the phone. Somebody had called her and wanted her to stand behind a product,” said Ian.

“I think they thought they were going to get a pushover, but oh my God, I listened to that girl lay down the law for what she would want if she did stand behind this product.

“I thought, “God, you could run classes on this girl!”

He continued: “Seasoned old actors would stand by and watch her because we were not used to that sort of thing, we were just jobbing actors, one job after another.

“But my God, you knew where you were with Kylie that she was going to be a huge star.”

Kylie Minogue later left Neighbours in 1988 and went on to become a global chart-topping musician, while her onscreen hubby Jason Donovan followed suit one year later.

Speaking ahead of Kylie and Jason’s return to Neighbours next week for the double episode finale, Ian revealed that he always knew that Kylie was someone special.

“She was fabulous, there was just something special about her that you couldn’t quite put your finger on, and she was feisty.

“She knew what she wanted, even back then.”
