BBC Breakfast turns awkward as Charlie Stayt destroys Bake Off star’s dessert on air

BBC Breakfast fans were left cringing behind a cushion as they watched Charlie Stayt’s awkward impression of Paul Hollywood as he destroyed a former Great British Bake Off star’s dessert on air.

The 60-year-old presenter and his co-host Naga Munchetty welcomed viewers back during Friday’s visit to the BBC One studio as they discussed the latest headlines to hit the news this morning (July 22).

And one of the hottest topics on their lips was the upcoming Bake-Off musical set to hit the stage in Cheltenham later this month.

To celebrate the brand-new production, the dynamic duo welcomed the winner of the first series of the Channel 4 series Ed Kemper back onto the show via video link alongside 2020 contestant Matt Patel who cooked up some delicious looking dishes for the TV hosts.

After talking to Ed about some of the behind-the-scenes secrets in the Bake Off tent, Charlie turned to Matt to discuss what it was like to be judged by the infamous Paul Hollywood as he viciously carved into a delicious looking tart.

The long-standing host couldn’t help but show off his impression of the Liverpudlian legend in front of the former contestant as he tucked into his mouth-watering treats.

He said: “When Paul Hollywood does this, he goes in with real gusto doesn’t he? It looks like he attacks the bakes doesn’t he? I’m going to try and do a Paul Hollywood style cut.”

As Naga delicately carved the meringue pie beside him, the dad-of-two aggressively chopped the tart up in front of Matt as he tried to explain Paul’s logic behind his cake-cutting skills.

Matt added: “Well I think he wants to try and see the consistency of what we’ve made.”

The brunette broadcaster was quick to slam her colleague for destroying his food, hitting back with: “He doesn’t stab it!”

Charlie excused his sloppy behaviour by exaggerating his rough carving of the dish through his poor impersonation of the baking judge.

He said: “No he does do that, do you know what I mean? He just gets in there and he hammers it in,” while Naga asked: “What are you doing?”

Clearly hurt by the host’s disregard for the time and effort Matt put into his baked goods, he confessed: “I’m sorry but this is sending me heart palpitations, I cannot do that.”

However, he quickly covered up his shock, saying: “I’m only joking, but you were a bit brutal there as well, but I’m only joking.”
