Liam Payne’s claim that ITV judge Simon Cowell created One Direction based around him appears to have been debunked.
A new clip which was never aired on X Factor, reveals Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger putting together the boyband back in 2010.
All five members had auditioned for the TV show as solo stars but were eventually put together into a group, going on to global success.

The video shows Simon, Louis and Nicole sifting through photo cards on the judges’ table in the 2010 series of the show as they tried to choose a group.
Niall Horan and Harry Styles were shown to the first people selected for the boyband, before being joined by Louis Tomlinson.
Louis is heard saying: “We liked him,” about Harry, as Nicole replies: “Put him with him,” about Niall, to which Simon agreed.
Nicole added: “They’re the cutest boyband ever, I love it! The little girls are gonna love them!”
As Louis was added to the list, Louis said: “What we’re trying to do is… if we’ve got a really good boy band, a really good vocal group… a male group…”
Nicole replied: “I think they’ll be really great in a boyband together, they’re like little stars and you can’t get rid of little stars you know?”
Simon then got very excited as he saw Liam’s card, as he said: “Uh uh uh.
“He thinks he’s better than anyone else in that list.”
Louis agreed: “No he does Simon yeah. He has the confidence but he’s good, he’s consistent,” after Nicole said: “I think they he would definitely shine, I think he could be the leader.”
As the trio agreed about the four they then added Zayn into the mix and the boyband was finally formed.
The clip ended with Simon saying: “Now that is a good idea.
“Now that is the category I want, is them.”
Liam recently claimed to YouTuber Logan Paul on his podcast that the group had been created by Simon with him in mind, with the star saying he was the “inception” of the group.
He said: “From what I’ve heard part of the reason One Direction was made was because of Simon’s promise to me. That in two years I’ll make this work for you.
“So he kind of started with my face and worked out around the rest. I’ve never told this story before.”
Logan asked: “Wow, you were the inception?”
Liam replied: “I was the honorary member of One Direction, yes. He [Simon] told me that story himself in his house.”
