Gladiators' Vogue married contender she fancied after co-star and security set them up

Gladiators icon Vogue may have been one of the most desired women on TV back in the 90s – but she’s revealed that despite her looks and fame, she was tongue-tied with shyness when she first met her husband.

The star of the smash hit show – set to make a return to screens after 22 years away – has confessed how she had to enlist the help of a co-star and a security guard to ensure she hooked up with the man of her dreams.

Vogue – aka Suzanne Cox – fell head over heels in more ways than one when she met Mark Roberts, one of the contestants in the 1990s ITV show.

But she was so overcome with shyness she had to rely on others to get her a date with the hunk.

Thankfully it had a happy ending and the couple are this year celebrating 20 years of marriage and have two children.

Now aged 50, Suzanne joined Gladiators in 1995 and was given the stage name Vogue.

Speaking to The GladPod, a podcast all about Gladiators, Suzanne revealed how she got closer to one of the contestants than planned.

She said she first spotted her now husband Mark Roberts, a gym instructor, in a Birmingham nightclub in 1997 as Gladiators and contenders enjoyed an evening out before filming the last series of the show.

“I thought Mark looked really nice but I had no idea who he was,” she said. “Then when training started I was chatting to one of the cameramen and he told me what a nice guy Mark was.

“It was only later I realised he was the same man I’d seen in the nightclub.”

She said she then confided in fellow Gladiator Rebel and that’s when Cupid swung into action.

“It was like being back at school with people telling Mark I fancied him. Even the security guards got involved and brought Mark to my dressing room door – I was so embarrassed I wanted to die!”, she said.

“We were both totally embarrassed, people were trying to push us together. But as it happened we had a chat, went for coffee, went away from everyone else, spent half a day together, realised we got on really well and it was meant to be.”

Suzanne was an aerobics and fitness instructor before joining Gladiators. Her specialities on the show were backflips and she excelled at the Hang Tough, Tightrope and Powerball obstacles.

The couple continue to be very sporty, with Suzanne recording a number of fitness videos since the show ended and Mark competing in decathlons.

In May of this year, they celebrated their 20-year wedding anniversary and have a daughter called Amber and a son called Flynn.

Posting a picture of their wedding day on her Instagram page, Suzanne gushed: “Happy Anniversary to this one – 20 years ago today we were married at London Zoo!

“We’ve survived many crazy times and many more to come.. 2 teens, dogs, house moves, holidays and adventures – never a dull moment.

“Thanks for sticking by me, making me laugh and encouraging me to be better than I think I can… – the teens will be vomiting at the last bit!”
