Gladiators' Wolf, 69, 'would return' to show as he could complete events 'blindfolded'

Gladiators Wolf star has revealed he wants to return in the show’s reboot.

It was confirmed last month that the hit series, which ran from 1992 to 2000, will be returning to screens 22 years after its original end and has been picked up by the BBC.

69-year-old Michael Van Wijk made a name for himself after starring as Wolf throughout the show’s eight seasons and became the only gladiator not to miss an episode.

Now, the bodybuilder, who has lived in New Zealand for the past 16 years, has confirmed he would like to return and would happily do so in the iconic role he played for eight years.

In an exclusive chat with Daily Star, the TV icon explained that his age could be a reason why he wouldn’t be allowed to compete as a gladiator, but assured he could complete the gruelling events “blindfolded.”

“I would return. I could do it blindfolded. They might not let me because of my age, but I’ll sign any insurance indemnity or anything because I could do all the games.”

“I turn 70 next month, but I’m ripped, I’m cut, my abs are sticking out and I’m in good shape. I work out all the time in the gym so I’m really fit and strong.”

“So as I said it’ll be a piece of cake me doing it, but they might not consider it because of the age,” the gym owner added.

He went on to say that if he can’t be considered as a gladiator, he would love to return in a different role.

“I’d love to be considered as a presenter on the new series, but like I said I’d absolutely return as a gladiator. It doesn’t make a difference for me I’m ready to jump, climb, swim, move.”

Wolf, who became an instant hit with fans when the show first aired, revealed that he still gets recognised today and recalled a time when it happened while he was out in New Zealand.

“I was at the harbour and there were a couple of guys drinking. And this guy just dropped his full drink on the floor and went ‘Are you Wolf?’ and I was like ‘Um, yeah’ and he was like ‘Oh my god I can’t believe it,’ so it’s amazing that people still know me 30 years later.”
