BBC Breakfast host in 'terrifying' experience as they brand TV presenter 'mean'

BBC Breakfast star Jon Kay has revealed his “most terrifying moment” live on air.

The news host shared with his co-star Sally Nugent on Monday’s show (August 29) that he was really scared to go on University Challenge.

The topic arose as the programme is celebrating its 60th year anniversary and Sally thought it would be funny to bring up Jon’s stint on the show.

Sally said: “Later on in the programme, we are celebrating a really important anniversary. A very famous quiz show, it’s University Challenge of course.

“It’s been around 60 years, it’s had incredible guests on this programme – Jon Kay – the best brains in Britain, superstars, academics…”

“And people who happen to be near the studio and got involved in the Christmas special a couple of years ago,” quipped Jon.

He added: “It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done.”

Sally said: “You answered a question, though. It was alcohol-related.”

“I answered one question, yes. I didn’t speak again for the rest of the hour I thought I’ve got one in the bank don’t ruin it, Jon, don’t risk it,” the host shared.

Sally then pushed her co-host Jon on how “terrifying” the experience must have been for her BBC colleague and how she would never have been able to do it herself.

“It must be nerve-wracking though because of the music, when they announce your name, you must have been terrified I would have been too scared to do it,” she said.

The pair’s focus then shifted to University Challenge’s TV host, Jeremy Paxman.

Jeremy is known for his brutal no-filter ways and guests often find him daunting on the quiz show.

Sally said: “And Paxman was asking the questions, was he mean?”

Jon confessed: “Yes, there was no small talk, no chit-chat, it was just straight in asking questions. But he was very charming in a way.”
