Eurovision's Netta predicts Manchester will be 2023 host as UK shortlist announced

Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai has predicted which city she thinks will host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

Ukraine’s act Kalush Orchestra won the 2022 contest with their track Stefania, with hosting duties usually passed down to the winning country.

However, with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, it was decided that the UK would host instead, after Spaceman singer Sam Ryder placed second.

Seven cities have been shortlisted as potential hosts for the Eurovision Song Contest – Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle – and speaking exclusively to Daily Star, former winner Netta predicted who the host city could be.

Netta – who won the contest for Israel in 2018 – revealed that she has a history predicting the host city, saying: “I guess, it’s time to do this again.

“I’ll say Manchester. I’ll say that.”

However, the Toy and I Love My Nails singer gave her prediction with a warning, as she revealed that the city she always predicts as the host is usually incorrect.

“You know, I’m laughing because it’s a thing for me predict the city – because I always predict it wrong,” said Netta.

“When I won, I said ‘I love my country. Next year Jerusalem’ and then it was Tel Aviv.

“When Holland won, I said ‘we’re going to Amsterdam’ and then it was Rotterdam. When it was Italy, I said Rome and it wasn’t.

“It just isn’t the city every time.”

While the UK waits to see which city will be announced as the host, and if the singer’s prediction could be correct, Netta has been busy visiting the country to perform at events including London Pride.

Speaking about performing alongside artists including Emelie Sande at London Pride, she said: “It was amazing, it was so cool.

“London Pride was one of the craziest Pride parades I’ve ever seen. Everybody’s so welcoming and fun, and they’re all about love. It was 50 years for Pride in London and it was very special seeing everyone.”

The singer has also released her new song Playground Politica, a collaboration with the artist Mr Eazi, which Netta describes as a personal song about her childhood attending an international school in Nigeria.

“Music is very therapeutic to me,” said Netta.

“I grew up in Nigeria from the age of six months until I was six and half. It was a very special way of growing up. I went to an international school.

“In my class there were two girls from Nigeria, a boy from England, a boy from Japan and two girls from Kenya. It was a very small classroom.

“Everybody was different, but nobody was different. It was like a utopia.”

However after moving away from Nigeria, she felt like the kid who “didn’t fit in,” and would often use her breaks in school to return to her happiest times in the country.

“Whenever it was recess, I would run to the swing just to tune out and not be where I was. I was so unhappy. This was a place I would run to, and run to Nigeria in my head.”

She added: “The whole song is about craving to be a part of something. A part of a group, with my friends.”
