Sam Fender teases 'celebrity guests' ahead of St James' Park homecoming gig

Sam Fender’s dreams are coming true – he’ll headline a huge homecoming show at Newcastle United’s stadium next year.

Magpies fan Sam will be the first local to headline St James’ Park when he plays to 55,000 people on June 9.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Sam said: “When me and my band started five years ago, we used to dream about playing St James’.

“We’d say to each other, ‘Imagine if our music got to the place where we could play St James.’

“That was the pinnacle of everything, we didn’t know where we could go from there.

“That stadium is a church for us, so this show is beyond our wildest dreams.

“Being the first Geordie to headline there is wild. It’s just, holy s**t!”

Tickets go on sale on September 9 via samfender.com and myticket.co.uk. Support is from Inhaler and Holly Humberstone.

Club legend Alan Shearer joined Sam for the announcement, while current players Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn saw Sam’s gig at Newcastle Utilita Arena in April.

Asked if any players would join Sam on stage, he teased: “I don’t want to confirm anything that doesn’t then happen, but I’m sure there’ll be a couple of celebrity guests.

“We’ll have a couple of treats for everyone.”

Sam hopes he’ll somehow be able to incorporate his local pub, Low Lights Tavern, North Shields, into the concert.

But Sam admitted: “It’s tough going to Low Lights after a show in Newcastle.

“Everyone assumes it’s where I’ll go, so there tends to be about a hundred people waiting outside.

“Potentially, it’d be great to have Low Lights involved, but it always ends up being like a festival after our shows.”

Sam, who still lives locally, admits it’s hard to go out in Newcastle since his albums Hypersonic Missiles and Seventeen Going Under reached No1.

He explained: “I can’t really go out anywhere without there being a shower of selfies.”

With Newcastle having a huge injection of Saudi cash, Sam hopes his show climaxes a good season for them.

He enthused: “We’re fun to watch, which is amazing considering how tough it’s been for a long time.

“We’ve struggled for 15 years, but it’s starting to look as exciting as it did when I was a kid.”

Despite Sam being the first Geordie to headline his home ground, the rocker has had an impressive summer, playing his first headline festival set at Tramlines Festival, as well as gracing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and a sell-out show at Finsbury Park.
