BBC Breakfast fans slam Jon Kay over 'daft' questions to Labour's David Lammy

BBC Breakfast host Jon Kay ruffled viewers’ feathers with his “daft questions” when he interviewed Labour MP David Lammy on the show.

Jon has been providing coverage live from Downing Street this week to mark the announcement and introduction of new Conservative party leader and Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Throughout the coverage, Jon has taken time to chat to several MPs and experts as they weigh up how the country is set to move forward with the cost of living crisis as households brace themselves for a tough winter ahead.

David appeared on the show on Wednesday (September 7) representing the opposition as he gave Labour’s stance on what should happen next to aid British citizens and on their attitude towards calling for a general election.

Jon asked: “Given the seriousness of the situation and the emergency situation as far as energy bills, are you still calling for a general election now?”

The MP replied: “Look, the change that this country needs is a change of party, certainly a change of government, and that could only come about with a general election.

“So we are absolutely on a sure footing for a general election whenever that is called.”

Jon interjected: “But are you still calling for one to happen now? Do you think the British public really wants that?”

David responded: “Of course, we’d like a general election tomorrow because I think the British public are crying out for change.

“We get to put our case to the British public and the rules change in terms of media. There’s a fairness in how we can communicate your message but the truth is, as of yesterday, we have a new Prime Minister.”

Viewers however were not impressed by the line of questioning branding it “daft” as they took to Twitter to discuss the interview.

One wrote: “Daftest question of the morning on @BBCBreakfast to @DavidLammy ‘We’re facing a cost of living crisis, is this the right time to call for election?’. #Headscratcher! #didhejustsaythat?”

Another added: “Switched on #BBCBreakfast question to David Lammy re GE – ‘Do you think the British Public want one?’ – have they been asleep at #BBC these past few years?”

A third posted: “Jon Kay of #BBCBreakfast suggesting that Liz Truss will be ‘more formidable’ than Johnson for the opposition to deal with is peak Jon Kay.”

A fourth social media user Tweeted: “He never questioned where the money was coming from when Corbyn was saying what he’d spend!”

A fifth penned : “Dear Jon Kay, Stop being such a drama queen…”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
