GB News stars divided as King Charles honours William with historic title

GB News stars have reacted to King Charles’ announcement as he made Prince William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales.

His Majesty made his first public address as the reigning monarch, following the death of his beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died aged 96 on September 8.

Charles, 73, spoke to the United Kingdom and overseas territories where he is King as he paid tribute to his mum while also addressing his two children, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Before his accession, Charles was known as the Prince of Wales while Queen Camilla opted not to use the title in honour of his ex-wife, Diana, the Princess of Wales.

Addressing the nation, the sovereign said of his eldest son: “With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given.”

Moments later, while appearing on GB News, David Starkey said: “What it really is, the position of Prince of Wales since the first World War since the future Edward VIII has been conferred by full investiture as it was with Prince Charles, himself.

“Are we allowed a little humour on this occasion? That extraordinary service that was put together by Anthony Armstrong-Jones with that preposterous crown and whatever.

“The question will be, do we want an investiture? It’s a unique situation that we’ve got an old King and a fully adult heir who has not been created Prince of Wales.”

He continued: “What we could be confronted with is a coronation and an investiture.

“Now I imagine if I were Welsh, I would quite want my investiture too [at Caernarfon Castle] but equally it could be done anywhere.

“Historically the investiture at Caernarfon is an invention of that great figure of how can I say, Boris Johnson-like competence and immorality David Lloyd George, the old Welsh goat as opposed to the London goat.

“It’s invented to appear to the newly conscious nationhood of Wales, this is something that is going to be very striking over the next few days.”

Following the news, a source close to Catherine, Princess of Wales said she “appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.”
