Gogglebox fans have praised show bosses for “offering normality” and providing “comforting viewing” after Channel 4 made the decision to continue airing the latest series of the popular programme last night (September 9).
Many channels had opted to change their TV schedules following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8 aged 96.
As people continue to mourn the death of Britain’s longest reigning monarch, channels have changed their schedules to broadcast news coverage and tributes to Queen Elizabeth II.

However, Channel 4 released a statement announcing that they would continue to air the new series of Gogglebox, in order to bring “a sense of continuity for many of our viewers.”
The statement read: “Channel 4 exists to offer viewers an alternative and that is particularly important at times like this.
“Gogglebox is a much loved national institution and it will air as planned tonight bringing a valuable sense of continuity for many of our viewers.”
The decision to air the programme, which sees families give commentaries on the latest TV programmes, was largely welcomed by viewers – who also praised Channel 4.
One viewer said: “Really grateful to @Channel4 for broadcasting @C4Gogglebox tonight. As sad as the news is, this is the comfort viewing we all need tonight. Thanks #Gogglebox”
“Thank you @Channel4 for putting on Gogglebox we all needed that laugh as a break to all of the sad news we’ve had this last 24 hours,” said a second.
A third also agreed, saying: “I’m so glad Channel 4 decided to still show Gogglebox tonight. A welcome break. A brief distraction.
“I understand the need for rolling news coverage on other channels. And I’ve been watching a lot of it. But it’s nice to also have the option of something lighter to watch.”
“Not trying to be disrespectful in any way but thank you @Channel4 for giving us this weeks episode of #Gogglebox a chance for the nation to take their minds off the events of the last 24 hours for at least as little while,” commented a fourth.
Although Channel 4 made the decision to continue airing Gogglebox, other broadcasters including BBC and ITV, announced changes to their schedules on Friday night and to weekend programming.
