Liam Gallagher's biggest feuds – BRITs chaos, Robbie Williams 'fight' and Peter Kay dig

After rising to fame with brother Noel as part of Brit Pop legends Oasis in the early nineties, Liam Gallagher has become one of music’s biggest stars.

However, his antics on and off stage have become just as famous as the band’s music.

From causing at the 1996 BRIT Awards, to making jibes at fellow musicians, Liam has been at the centre of some huge controversies throughout his career.

As Liam celebrates his 50th birthday, Daily Star takes a look at the star’s biggest controversies.

BRIT Awards 1996 chaos

Oasis are undeniably one of the biggest acts of all time and in the mid-nineties, they were one of the bands who had spearheaded the Brit Pop movement.

It is no surprise then that they were honoured by the BRIT awards in 1996 as Best New Band.

However, despite thanking “all the people” in their speech, the band’s appearance did not come without a few controversies along the way.

The late INXS singer Michael Hutchence gave the band their award, but Liam took the microphone and could be heard making a jibe at the star.

He said: “‘Right, first thing first. I heard Michael was going to give me a slap. So come on…’

As Michael laughed the comments off, Liam walked away, but brother Noel added: “Has beens shouldn’t be dishing out awards to gonna bes.”

Along with making a dig at Blur, who the group had been previously been locked in a chart battle with, Liam took aim at host Chris Evans when the presenter tried to calm down proceedings onstage.

“I can’t believe this place has tried to send a ginger b*llocks up to get us off stage,” said Liam, before grabbing the BRIT award and poking it up his bum.

Robbie Williams offers to ‘fight’ Liam

Three years after their BRIT Awards 1996 chaos, Liam was at the center of another controversy – but it wasn’t him who started it.

Friend and rival Robbie Williams had roared to success as a solo artist in the late nineties and was awarded Best Single at the 1999 BRIT Awards.

However, he took aim at Liam in his acceptance speech, saying: “Liam – £100,000 of your money, £100,000 of my money – we’ll get in the ring, we’ll have a fight and everyone here can watch it on TV.”

At the Q Awards in the same year, Liam later dedicated his award to Robbie.

Peter Kay calls Liam a “kn*bhead”

Liam’s appearance at the 2010 BRIT Awards celebrated 30 years of Oasis’ 1995 hit record (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, after it was voted the best album of the previous 30 years.

Like with previous award shows though, Liam could not help but make a jibe at someone – this time, his brother Noel.

The sibling’s feud was widely known, and in his acceptance speech, Liam made sure to thank everyone, except his brother.

He said thank you to “‘Bonehead, Guigs, Alan White..” before leaving a huge pause, adding: “best band in the f***ing world. Live Forever.”

To add fuel to the fire, Liam then walked to the front of the stage and threw both his microphone and award into the crowd – much to the surprise of singer Noddy Holder, who had given Liam the award.

Cheers of applause erupted from the audience, but his actions did not seem to please everyone, including comedian and host Peter Kay.

Taking to the stage, Peter said: “What a kn*bhead.”

Paul Weller Twitter spat

Liam took aim at the so-called Mod-father himself in 2017.

The two music icons had previously been photographed together at events, including the Gala screening of Magical Mystery Tour at The BFI Southbank in 2012.

However, following the release of Liam’s critically acclaimed solo album As You Were in 2017, which was also loved by fans, Paul Weller called its lyrics “a little bit substandard.”

During an interview with Northern Transmissions’ Records In My Life series, the star said: “I’m glad he’s got his own thing together and he’s out there doing it. I’m really pleased on that level.

“Musically, it just sounds like Beady Eye – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it wasn’t a massive surprise or anything.

“But I think I’m more pleased that he’s out there doing that. The lyrics are pretty pony I thought, a little bit sub-standard.”

The comments did not please Liam, who took to Twitter to take aim at Paul.

He said in a tweet: “I don’t give a f*** what Paul Weller thinks I’ve never been 1 of his little bitches and he f***ing knows it.”

Liam and Noel’s feud

As well known as Oasis’ records is the feud between brothers Liam and Noel.

The siblings have traded insults with one another since the group split up after their final concert in Paris in 2009 – and their feud has been a long running feature ever since.

Along with hurling insults at one another on social media, the two have taken aim at each other’s music projects, with Liam called Noel a “sh**bag” following the announcement of Noel’s self titled album with The High Flying Birds in 2011.

However last year, Noel admitted that he was the one who started the feud and not Liam, after he donated clothes from his brother’s brand Pretty Green to a charity shop – before the brand even launched in 2006.

Noel told The Matt Morgan Podcast: “Liam gave us a load of clobber, not just me, he gave the band it.

“I went straight to the charity shop and left it in the shop doorway.

“He went f****** mental. He said, ‘If you didn’t f****** want it, you should have just said you didn’t f****** want it, you c***.’

“It was on the shop mannequin in Barnardo’s a month before it launched. If push comes to shove, that was the beginning of the end.”

In recent years though, the two brothers have both hinted a reunion could be on the cards, with Liam tweeting: “Earth to noel listen up rkid I hear your doing gigs where people can’t drink alcohol now that’s the BeZarist thing you’ve done yet I forgive you now let’s get the BIG O back together and stop f***ing about the drinks are on me LG x.”

But will Oasis ever get back together? Fans will have to wait and see.
