I'm A Celeb's Harry Redknapp feared he'd killed wife Sandra after horror car accident

Harry Redknapp thought he’d accidentally killed his wife Sandra after running her over in 2016.

The former football manager and I’m A Celeb star recounted one of the “worst days of his life” in the couple’s new autobiography, When Harry Met Sandra.

The couple, both 75, had set out to enjoy a leisurely day of shopping in Westbourne, but it all went horribly wrong when Harry unknowingly reversed his car into his wife.

Harry had just parked up their car, a 4×4, and called out to Sandra who had left the vehicle to hit the shops.

He had tried to warn her about the traffic, but it was their car that was the problem as he reversed into her foot and trapped it under the wheel.

Sandra said: “I felt this huge pressure on my foot and I was suddenly being dragged down.

“‘Harry!’ I screamed. I started banging on the car. ‘Harry!’ He had reversed over my ankle. I fell into the road as a bus was coming. I could just hear Harry panicking.”

Harry and Sandra recalled the traumatic ordeal in their book, When Harry Met Sandra

Harry heard his wife screaming and, for a “moment in time”, was scared he’d accidentally killed her.

He said: “I thought another car had hit her. I heard her scream, but I didn’t realise it was me who’d knocked her down. I really thought for a moment in time that I had lost her. She was lying in absolute agony on the floor.”

The former Spurs boss went on: “I looked down in horror at her foot, which looked like it had been sliced like a piece of bacon. There was blood everywhere.

“And it was all my fault.”

Sandra’s friend appeared at the gruesome scene and told a worried Harry not to look at his wife’s foot, with the emergency serves on their way.

Sandra recalled: “The next thing I remember is sirens and being stretchered into the back of an ambulance.”

“Harry was beside himself and in a panic, and it was breaking my heart to see him in such a state,” she added.

Granddaughter Molly was riding the bus when the accident occurred and was shocked to see it was her grandmother being stretchered into an ambulance.

Harry told Sandra: “I thought I lost you,” as the ambulance rushed her to hospital.

She was given crutches and several skin graft operations because the wound kept on getting infected.

Sandra explained that the police turned up to investigate the freak accident, with a horrified Harry repeatedly apologising to Sandra and the officers who were “good as gold”.

When Harry Met Sandra is out on Thursday (September 29), £20, published by Mirror Books
