While he promoted the launch of his new book – which is inspired by his long-standing show – the former politician recalled a hilarious story with the royal during a taping of the show.

He told viewers at home: “The subject came up, My Secret Crush, and I suddenly found myself going back to my teenage years and talking about going to boarding school and near the boarding school was this big house.

“And I went to this big house because I was having tea there and then in the garden I found this rather attractive girl.

“I was 16 she was 17, she was wearing jodhpurs – I was conjuring up all this up in just a minute – smoking her wood vines in the shrubbery. This was actually a girl called Camilla Shand”.

The ITV star went on to joke that as much as he enjoyed making and producing the show, that he never expected the royal household to listen to the programme at home.

He went on: “Little did I think that she might be listening to the programme, it never occurred to me that then Duchess of Cornwall, now the Queen Consort, would be listening to Just A Minute.

“And about a week after this broadcast went out, she – the Duchess of Cornwall – was visiting our local church because it was part of the Queen’s Jubilee that year – and she saw my wife.

“And she said, ‘Tell Gyles, I don’t deny that I was smoking but they were not wood vines!’.”
