The Chase's Shaun Wallace shares reason why he's ruled out doing more reality TV shows

The Chase star Shaun Wallace has ruled out doing any more reality TV – because he fears becoming a laughing stock in the courtroom.

When he’s not being the Dark Destroyer on the hit quiz show Shaun is a practising barrister.

He says: “I do get the offers but I’m not a reality type of guy.

“I still practise as a barrister and there is a limit to what I will do.

“The last reality-type challenge I did was Don’t Rock The Boat, and that was a physical challenge where myself and seven other celebs rowed the length of Britain.

“I’ll do something like that but any other type of reality show is not really for me.

“If Celebrity SAS asked me five years ago I probably would have done it but not with my knees now.”

Balancing the two worlds means he is often recognised, even under his legal wig.

Shaun, 62, who received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from London Met University in 2015, says: “One thing I don’t do is take for granted being on The Chase but I’m a barrister first and foremost.

“Yes, people recognise who I am – I can’t help that fact – but I can’t use my fame to get a required result. I can’t change the evidence.

“I’ve been a barrister for 38 years, a Chaser for 13 years.”

After Beat The Chasers – a spin-off where contestants take on all five Chasers – won a National TV Award last week, Shaun is confident the show’s strong brand will continue.

He adds: “When we star-ted we hoped we’d get a second series but to go into 13 years and counting is fantastic.

“That’s a tribute to us as Chasers. The public warmed to us and our res-pective characters.

“Bradley Walsh is the nat-ion’s sweetheart and he’s a fantastic host.

“But it’s a tribute to the producers pushing the boundaries and trying to make The Chase as fresh as it can be.”

So will there be more spin-offs?

Shaun says: “Who knows how those brilliant minds that come up with the creatives for our show think?”

Over the weekend Shaun joined bingo fans at Gala Bingo’s

Hot Air Balloon Tea Rooms, inspired by the bingo call: “Number three, cup of tea.”

“Bingo is a wonderful experience,” says Shaun. “The thrill of shouting house, a stick of rock at the seaside or a very nice prize is really fantastic.

“The most important thing is it brings people together.

“I don’t think I’ve ever shouted house but it’s something I’m looking forward to.” Fellow Chasers Anne Hegerty and Mark Labbett also popped by for a cuppa overlooking London’s Tower Bridge.

And Shaun, who appeared on The Junk Food Experiment in 2019, praised Mark for his 10st weight loss.

He said: “I’m glad he did because although he’s known as The Beast and is lovely and cuddly, you’ve got to look after your health.”
