Emmerdale's biggest ever blunders – 'illegal' mistake, age changes and storm error

Emmerdale might be one of the most successful soaps on TV nowadays, but it hasn’t been without its mistakes.

Stunt weeks might have the biggest budgets of all evening soaps, but the high-risk super soap weeks also carry with them plenty of potential to fall victim to errors as the stars and writers are put through their paces.

As a huge storm – which some viewers are already branding “embarrassing” – rages over the ITV Dales, causing chaos and death for all in its path, we take a look at the biggest blunders ever to hit the village – from ‘illegal’ mistakes to age discrepancies.

‘Illegal’ mistake

When Rhona’s mum Mary decided to come out as a lesbian to her daughter, Rhona was fuming that her life seemed to have been built on lies.

But as Mary tried to justify her reasons for not coming out sooner, she referenced lesbianism being “illegal” back in the day – which isn’t true.

Though consensual sex between two men was only decriminalised in 1967 under the Sexual Offences Act, sex between women was never against the law.

An attempt was made in 1921 to add ‘acts of indecency by females’ to the 1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act, but the move was rejected.

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted the error and quickly took to social media to air their thoughts, with one writing: “Actually # emmerdale lesbianism was never illegal for women… it was only us men it was illegal for.”

Another echoed: “Lesbianism has never been illegal – however being a male gay sadly was.”

Meena errors

From missing evidence to the loss of key witnesses, Meena’s trial was a comedy of errors
(Image: ITV)

Court scenes are always a tense affair in any soap, but serial killer Meena Jutla’s murder trial saw things take a bizarre turn as she held the court – and her sister Manpreet – hostage.

But the tense affair wasn’t without its baffling errors, as viewers were baffled by absent witnesses, missing evidence and more.

Though Meena’s trial saw witnesses including including Liam Cavanagh give testimony, the words of many key witnesses were missing – including Billy and Dawn Fletcher, who were both held at gunpoint by the killer.

Charles Anderson, who Meena confessed her crimes to, was also in court but failed to take the stand, leaving viewers baffled.

The video clip of Meena attempting to drown Victoria Sugden – which she killed Ben over – was also missing from the trial, with DNA evidence also being skipped over completely.

And while Meena lied about her miscarriage, her medical records were never brought into the courtroom.

Baffled viewers took to social media at the time to share their confusion, as one wrote: “Do courts really let witnesses spout hours of narrative full of unverifiable and uncorroborated assumptions and opinion completely unchallenged?”

Someone else echoed: “So they can look at her medical records to see if Ben had hurt her but not if she was really pregnant???”

As another fumed: “The verdict’s literally in less than 24 hours & they still haven’t used half the f***ing evidence. Also why wasn’t Vinny also called as a witness? They didn’t even bother to run a DNA test on Leanna’s body/clothing at the time yet found Liv’s DNA after Ben really?”

Police incompetence or a simple mistake in the writers’ room? You be the judge – and the jury.

Age changes

Baby Eve often seems to change ages in the Emmerdale village

Chas’ daughter baby Eve left fans befuddled as she appeared to change her age in a week.

The tot was in her pram while mum Chas lied to Paddy about her illicit affair with Al after spending the night in a hotel with him – and Eve could be heard gurgling from her seat.

Earlier that week, she had been seen as a toddler in the cafe, drawing pictures and walking around.

Fans were not going to let this one slide, as they immediately flocked to online forums to post: “Eve is 3, why have they got her sat in her pram sounding like a baby?”

As another echoed: “Last week Eve was sitting up in a chair drawing pictures looking about 2. Now she’s reverted back to a babbling 8 month old. Make up your mind.”

Someone else posted: “Eve was a two year old running around last week, now she’s back in a pushchair talking baby language.”

Make-up blunder

Emmerdale’s Leyla woke up with perfect make-up after gruelling surgery

Though it’s true Leyla Cavanagh actress Roxy Shahidi always looks on top form, fans were baffled to see her still wearing make-up after being shot twice by Meena.

Following gruelling surgery, Leyla could be seen relaxing in her hospital bed hooked up to various tubes and machines – with perfect eyeliner, brows and lippy.

Baffled viewers joined together in an outcry of confusion, with one penning: “Loving Leyla’s flawless makeup and lippy, straight after being shot and surgery too.”

“Leyla has just been through life-saving surgery and still looks absolutely stunning,” another posted, while a third viewer said: “Bloody hell, Leyla looks well seeing as she’s just come out of surgery after being shot.”

Storm ‘embarrassment’

The 50th anniversary storm hasn’t escaped the scrutiny of eagle-eyed Emmerdale fans – especially as Liv and Vinny found themselves trapped underneath a flying caravan.

But viewers noticed that despite the gale-force winds wreaking havoc on the village, trees in the distance remained completely motionless.

The village has been taunted by wind machine noises since Kim Tate’s wedding day went wrong, but it wasn’t having much of an impact beyond its borders.

One Twitter user pointed out: “A storm so localised the trees in the background are not swaying lol.”

As someone else said: “This was way too far over the top. A car blew over? Trees bending but 10 yards in the distance they were perfectly still! Quite embarrassing how overdone it was. And is it just me but for the past week or so has the sound quality been shocking?”

And another quipped: “It’s very windy in #Emmerdale but the trees in the distance don’t move. Now that’s where I’d be walking!”
