James Corden’s biggest feuds – co-star fall-out, restaurant ban and Ricky Gervais spat

James Corden is a bit of a marmite character – you either love him or don’t at all.

While the singer, actor, comedian and now chat show host is undeniably talented, he does seem to rub some people up the wrong way.

After starring in 2006’s History Boys, a film adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play, and of course global smash Gavin & Stacey, James moved to LA where he went from moderately successful British celebrity to bonafide A-lister after landing his own late-night chat show.

James, 44, also started the world-famous skit Carpool Karaoke where he pretends to ask famous singers if they will share a lift with him before belting out all their hits.

The likes of Jennifer Lopez, Billie Eilish and even Michelle Obama have taken part.

But despite his gregarious personality and being “relatable”, occasionally stories pop up about him being “difficult” or of him “feuding” with other names.

The latest is the reported fallout with a well-known restaurant owner in New York who has banned Corden for being “extremely rude” to his staff.

Read on to find out all about the dad-of-two’s supposed beefs past and present.

New York restaurant ban

The owner of an upmarket New York eatery called Balthazar recently called Corden a “tiny cretin of a man” after the star was apparently “abusive” to his serving staff on two occasions.

The first time, Corden found a hair in his food so he demanded that all his table’s drinks should be free.

The restaurant owner, Keith McNally, said that while finding hair in food is “diabolical”, it does happen occasionally and Corden was “the most abusive customer to my Balthazar servers since the restaurant opened 25 years ago”.

McNally went on to say that despite the restaurant being “apologetic” Corden threatened to leave a horrid Yelp review if he didn’t get his “drinks taken care of”.

The second incident occurred when Corden’s wife Julia Carey ordered an egg yolk omelette but it came out with a bit of white in it.

Corden returned it but, unfortunately, the waiting staff brought it back with chips instead of salad.

The Late Late Show host then started “yelling” and said: “You can’t do your job! Maybe I should go into the kitchen and cook the omelette myself!”

Initially, Corden tried to brush the ban off, calling it “silly” and “insane” when quizzed about it by The New York Times.

He also insisted he “did nothing wrong” and that he “feels so zen about the whole thing”.

Corden has since apologised “profusely” to McNally and the ban has been lifted.

The outspoken restaurateur said on Instagram: “James Corden just called me and apologised profusely.

“Having f***ed up myself more than most people, I strongly believe in second chances.”

Feud with Ricky Gervais

Corden and Ricky Gervais have traded insults for years and it’s unclear whether the pair are joking or genuinely dislike each other.

Both are British, wrote award-winning sitcoms then went on to “break America” so they have quite a bit in common. But that’s not enough to make them pals, it seems.

However, Gervais in particular has assured fans that the teasing is “just fun”.

It started way back in 2009 during the Gavin and Stacey star’s short-lived sketch show Horne and Corden where Gervais was depicted as a bumbling fool looking for work.

Then after The Office star hosted the Golden Globes in 2011 and decimated the audience, James blasted Gervais’s outrageous gags by promising he would be more “warm and sensitive” when hosting the BRITs.

He said: “I’m not going to go down the Ricky Gervais road because, well, you can’t in that room, anyway – there’s a big difference between the O2 and the dining room in the Beverly Hilton.”

More recently, Corden made a joke about Harvey Weinstein on his chat show which Gervais slammed, saying that if you’re going to make a joke about sexual misconduct it has to be “very intelligent and with a point to it”, adding: “He did it like it was light entertainment. He didn’t do it well enough.”

The next volley of insults came when Gervais, 61, hosted the Golden Globes again in 2020 and called Corden a “fat p*ssy” – referencing his part in Cats.

That was followed with a barbed dig in After Life where his character jokes that Corden’s main job is a chauffeur (another reference to Carpool Karaoke).

Gervais told The Sun there is “no animosity” between the pair though and that all the jibes are just “friendly teasing”.

However, the provocative star couldn’t help but share a jokey tweet referencing Corden’s restaurant ban…

Fall out with Mathew Horne

Corden and his Gavin and Stacy co-star Mathew Horne were inseparable in the noughties and after becoming major stars together, went on to make the film Lesbian Vampire Killers and of course, their own (panned) sketch show.

Then Corden make it big in the States and it appeared the once close pair had drifted apart.

Rumours of a feud were further sparked when Corden appeared on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and was told that Mat, 44, declined to take part.

Corden insisted there had been no row and said the pair had “intense love for each other” and also told the Daily Star: “We were one person for a long time.

“In one year we spent 263 days together and we went from that to nothing.

“We had the best time, and the truth is these things that were offered to us – the sketch show, the film, hosting the BRITs with Kylie Minogue – all these things, we just rushed into them.

“We just went, ‘Yes! Wow! We’re going to be the leads in a film together! We going to do a sketch show!’ If I have one regret it’s that we rushed those things.”

When he was told Mat didn’t want to take part in Piers’ show, he seemed hurt but Mat later set the record straight and said : “I didn’t go on that show because I was filming out of London, and they could only film my interview on one day, and I couldn’t do it.”

Although Mat said later, he “should have put my feelings about Morgan and ethics aside” to support James as he was “greatly indebted” to him and loves him very much.

The Bad Education star has also said that they talk when they can “time differences allowing”.
