Chris Kamara's 'so popular he's become Britain's answer to Justin Bieber', says co-star

Chris Kamara is so popular he has become Britain’s answer to Justin Bieber.

The presenter, 64, gets mobbed whenever he is out in public, according to pal Rochelle Humes, 33, who hosts Ninja Warrior UK with Kammy.

She told the Daily Star: “When I’m out and about with Chris in Manchester, it feels like I’m out with Justin Bieber.

“When we leave the hotel to go to film, you hear fans shouting, ‘Kammy, Kammy, Kammy’.

“They come over to us to get photos. They’ll say to me, ‘Rochelle, can you take a picture of us?”

Rochelle has even had to start acting like his security guard.

She added: “Chris can’t go anywhere on his own. He needs security when he’s out, especially in places where football is really popular. When we’re together it’s like I’m his security guard.”

Chris was on the verge of quitting telly late last year when he was diagnosed with speech apraxia.

It ended his 24 years as a match-day roving reporter with Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports.

But support from TV executives and fans has convinced him to keep going, and he has since returned to primetime.

Kammy has since revealed that there are days when his speech is slower or slurred but he sometimes wakes up unable to talk at all.

However, he has now been given hope of recovering from the condition after being introduced to a neurologist in the USA, who has told him there is “no reason” he cannot be cured.

Kamara explained, via The Sun: “I’ve just been introduced to the best neurologist in America and he said because I have good days, there’s no reason why I can’t be cured. I’ve sent off a load of blood tests and everything to America and I’m just waiting on the results.”

On the impact of the condition, Kammy added: “I wouldn’t say I’m more than 60 per cent the old me – but I was 20 per cent.”
