Matt Goss has revealed he found Strictly Come Dancing’s “competitive” nature and environment “difficult,” during his time on the show.
The When Will I be Famous singer and his professional dance partner Nadiya Bychkova became the third pair to leave Strictly, after the judges chose to keep Coronation Street actress Kym Marsh and partner Graziano Di Prima in the competition.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star following the recording of new song The Beautiful Unknown with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Matt spoke about his time on Strictly and revealed that he found the competitive nature of the show “difficult.”

He said: “What was equally difficult for me, was the environment.”
Speaking about taking part in the competition against fellow celebrities, he continued: “As an artist you don’t really compete. You don’t compete with your fellow artists, you co-create. You get influenced, like wow, I love that song.
“I love Stevie Wonder, or I love Bruno Mars, or I love Billy Eilish – whoever it may be. You pull elements. This kind of symbiotic relationship between musicians.”
“Last night when we did the bridge [while recording The Beautiful Unknown], it was very Beatles inspired. That’s a beautiful thing.
“Whereas when you’re on Strictly, it’s like, you’re going to be critiqued by four people. In some ways you want to take it on the chin, which I did, in some ways you might go, well…It’s subjective isn’t it? Like art is subjective.
“It’s a very, very difficult lift I think, for an artist.”
Matt has now returned to the stage for his forthcoming record, which saw him record The Beautiful Unknow with the Royal Philharmonic at Fairfield Halls – with the video directed by Phil Griffin, who has previously worked with Amy Winehouse, Paul McCartney and Prince.
“Bringing in an orchestra for a pop song, and the emotion that was in the room, I just want The Beautiful Unknown to almost make it into the lexicon of the British language, as a phrase,” said Matt, saying that he “needs my music to be heard now.”
He added: “Even if people just raise a glass and go ‘to The Beautiful Unknown’ and acknowledge things that we don’t know and we believe can be good and can be exciting and can be joyful, rather than scary, I think that situation is why I wrote the song.”
Matt also hopes to top the charts with the song, saying: “I’d love to have the Christmas number one and have people connect with this beautiful piece of music.”
