James Corden issues apology for 'rude' and 'wrong' behaviour at New York restaurant

Actor and comedian James Corden has spoken out after Balthazar, a restaurant in New York, banned the 44-year-old for rude behaviour.

The former Gavin and Stacey star, who moved to the US and currently hosts The Late Late Show with James Corden has said he was “walking around thinking I’d done nothing wrong”.

In a statement on his show, he said, “I didn’t shout or scream, I didn’t get up out of my seat, I didn’t call anyone names or use derogatory language,

“But the truth is I have made a rude, rude comment. And it was wrong. It was an unnecessary comment, it was ungracious to the server.”

James says that the incident occurred after his wife was served food which she “was allergic to”.

After finding out about the ban, he “immediately” contacted the restaurant’s owner, Keith McNally, to apologise.

McNally claimed in a social media post that the talk show host had been “extremely nasty” to his staff.

In a post to Instagram, he called the comedian “a cretin of a man”.

“James Corden is a Hugely gifted comedian, but a tiny Cretin of a man. And the most abusive customer to my Balthazar servers since the restaurant opened 25 years ago. I don’t often 86 a customer, to today I 86’d Corden. It did not make me laugh…”

He went on to list two manager reports about James’ time at the restaurant.

The 44-year-old reportedly said, “Get us another round of drinks this second. And also take care of all of our drinks so far. This way I write any nasty reviews in yelp or anything like that.”

They explained that James had addressed that something was wrong with the dish, but later told the server they “can’t do their job”.

James has said that the two have spoken about what happened.

“He appreciated the call. I was happy that we got to clear the air. And I felt like we dealt with it privately… but by this point, the story was out there and more people were upset.”

He also addressed some of the less than complimentary posts about him that have written on social media.

“I get it. I totally understand. I understand everybody getting upset, and I accept everybody’s opinion.”
