Antiques Roadshow fans baffled as BBC guest appears with relatively new painting

Antiques Roadshow viewers were left scratching their heads after a guest took on a picture from 1989.

The painting by Gunther Uecker, one of Germany’s most famous artists, was one of the items on Sunday’s instalment of the BBC show.

It was taken on the show by a woman who was given it by her grandmother last year.

However, viewers were totally distracted from her story by the fact that the black and white picture was dated just 33 years ago.

Many baffled fans posted messages on social media questioning how something from the 80s could be considered an antique.

One posted a meme on Twitter of a man holding his head in his hands that was captioned: “Oh for the love of God.”

1989? some antique,” said someone else.

“Dated 1989 come on, it’s younger than me. how can that be an antique, nice picture though,” said another.

One tweeted: “1989 it’s not an antique…”

“Does this mean that my children are now antiques?” quipped another confused viewer.

Someone else joked: “1989? Won’t be long before millennium souvenirs are brought in at this rate.”

Expert Frances Christie said the piece was “one of the more unusual pictures” to have been on the show.

She told the stunned owner that the poster could fetch somewhere in the region of £600 to £800 if it went under the hammer.

The owner was clearly taken aback, saying that the painting was hung on her wall at home.
