Jeremy Clarkson said police should forget Tarquins and “crack some skulls” to combat violent crime – before vigilantes take “matters into their own hands”.
The Clarkson’s Farm host said forces are focused on tackling the wrong types of offenders who “no one cares about”.
They include “eco-idiots”, hate criminals, speeders and “Fiona and Rupert” indulging in “a bit of light druggery”.

Instead, police should focus on robbers, thieves and gangsters to restore “law and order” to Britain’s streets.
Unless they start getting tough on real villains Jeremy, 62, warned the public will act like they do over failing state education and health systems – and go private.
“When well-off people look at the local state school and decide it isn’t good enough they educate their kids privately instead,” he said.
“It’s the same story with the NHS.
“So what’s going to stop the residents of a neat little village in Surrey from employing their own private police force?
“And then appointing their own court system to decide how the miscreants should be executed?”
The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? presenter said forces do not have the manpower to tackle every crime.
Since his local police station shut three years ago the two remaining officers have been housed “in a broom cupboard at the fire station” and go on patrol in a “Vauxhall Corsa”.
He said new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak needed to sit down with the nation’s chief constables and “deploy some common sense”.
“He needs to tell them that eco-idiots don’t matter. Hate crimes don’t matter. A bit of light druggery doesn’t matter. Doing 34mph doesn’t matter. No one cares about any of this,” the TV star said.
“What does matter is that you can no longer wear a watch when you go into town and that half the people in the 16-24 age bracket now believe that paying for a phone is entirely optional.

“He needs to tell them to bring back the Special Patrol Group and crack some skulls.’’
Clarkson said his daughter, who lives in London, no longer dares “go to the local shopping centre because it is permanently full of gangs with bats and blades”.
“They can do whatever they want because they know for a fact that the police are not coming,’’ he said.
“And they’re not coming because they are all busy trying to catch Fiona and Rupert with a bit of powder, or, more likely, they’re standing around on the pavement, with their hands in their pockets, watching a group of ecoherberts who’ve glued themselves to the road.’’
He said police “can and must do something about law and order”.
“Because from where I’m sitting it’s starting to feel like there isn’t any.’”
