Netflix bosses 'ignored Prince William's plea' as infamous Diana interview airs

Netflix’s The Crown bosses have reportedly ignored pleas from Prince William regarding the notorious Princess Diana interview with Martin Bashir in 1995.

In 2021, The Dyson report found that Martin Bashir had used forgery and “deceitful behaviour” to gain access to the Princess.

The Prince asked for the series not to share the Panorama interview, but The Crown have refused pleas and taken things a step further by adding made-up lines to dramatise the scene.

The Netflix drama, due next week, has two episodes building up to the infamous interview and its aftermath.

The original hour-long interview has been shortened to four minutes and will include some of the most inflammatory quotes from Diana, including mention of the “crowded marriage” she endured whilst Charles had an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

The streaming giant have added fabrications and exaggerated language to make Princess Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, sound more sympathetic.

They also show an enraged Prince Charles, played by Dominic West, swearing and shouting at the screen as he watches the interview, accusing Diana of casting doubt on his ability to be King.

Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine and friend of Diana, who sadly died in 1997, has slammed the show’s refusal of Prince William’s pleas, stating the Prince will “be furious”.

“William will be furious. He said his piece when he said it should never be aired again. This is his mother and her memory they are doing this to”, she said.

She continued: “It must be very frustrating as he can’t say any more because it will just give Netflix more publicity.”

In the show, a young Prince William watches the interview from his Eton dorms and is asked by a fellow pupil if he’s okay.

In a statement last April, William said the interview was “a major contribution” in making in parent’s relationship worse and fuelling his mother’s paranoia.

He said: “It is my view that the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said. The interview was a major contribution to making my parents’ relationship worse and has since hurt countless others.”

“It is my firm view that this Panorama programme holds no legitimacy and should never be aired again.”
