Drew Barrymore believed ET was real and 'loved' alien on Hollywood film set

Drew Barrymore says she believed ET was a real alien working on the hit film.

The former child movie star ate lunch with the space creature and even kept him warm during cold shoot days.

She says she was completely unaware that the animatronic prop was fake on the set in 1982.

But her belief was aided by director Steven Spielberg ordering the ET operators to keep the creature mechanically moving and gesturing to the then seven-year-old star.

She said: “I believed ET was real. I really, really loved him in such a profound way. I would go and take lunch to him.”

Her comments came while speaking on her US show The Drew Barrymore Show with fellow co-stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace and Robert MacNaughton.

Thomas says the first thing he remembers was Drew asking the wardrobe lady if they could have a scarf for ET’s neck because he was going to get cold.

Wallace, who played her mother in the film, recalled how Spielberg was a key reason for the child star’s belief in aliens.

She said: “We found you over there just talking away to ET and so we let Steven know.

“So Steven, from that time on, appointed two guys to keep ET alive so whenever you came over to talk to him he could react to you.”

Barrymore admitted: “I had a very wild imagination then. When I came onto the set I felt this is family.

“It was real. It was the best experience in the world.”

Barrymore later became addicted to cocaine, which she said got her blacklisted in Hollywood at the age of 12.

She was placed in rehab and mental institutions, but after a suicide attempt at 14 and some more rehabilitation, she was granted legal emancipation from her mother.
