Corrie fans convinced Spider is set to be rumbled as Max finds himself in danger

Coronation Street fans have become concerned as it looks like Spider’s job as an undercover cop might be in jeopardy.

On Monday’s episode of the soap (October 31), Spider Nugent (Martin Hancock) became entangled with Max Turner after the teen was lured to a Halloween party by the scheming Griff (Michael Condron).

ITV announced last week that a new storyline would see Max groomed into joining a far-right gang.

Griff was originally introduced as a friend of Spider’s, with who he seemingly shared his environmental views, and who quickly bonded with girlfriend Toyah Habeeb (Georgia Taylor).

However, things weren’t smooth for long after Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) took a liking to Griff.

The two attended a concert together and Peter confronted the group about racist lyrics that were sung by the band.

The harrowing grooming story began on Monday after Griff had invited Max to his flat after he had been attacked by bullies at school.

Spider, who was there as an undercover cop, tried to get the teenager to leave, however Max ended up staying and dressing in a dodgy costume that was accompanied by a Hitler-looking moustache; Griff claimed the finishing touch of a top hat turned him into Charlie Chaplin.

Max was even allowed to down cans of beer, and when Spider tried to intervene, he was asked why by the menacing Griff.

A new storyline will see Max groomed by extremist Griff

Fans believe that this isn’t only a dangerous situation for Max and his loved ones, but it might prove to hurt Spider’s career as a police officer.

“Spiders gonna end up blowing his cover if he doesn’t butt out,” wrote one concerned fan.

Corrie producer Ian MacLeod said Max’s involvement with the Griff’s extremism will see the use of “traditional” radicalisation techniques, at a time when the teen is feeling most venerable.

“Overall, Max’s story is one about the grooming of a vulnerable teenager at a point where he’s feeling most alienated and disenfranchised.

“The story will encompass the “traditional” recruitment techniques of extremists groups, and we’ll see Max befriended in person by older, mentor-like figures that will give him a sense of loyalty and brotherhood.

“Then, later in the story, we will explore a very 21st Century problem: teenagers self-radicalising through watching extreme content online.”
