Aldi shoppers in stitches after spotting 'dig at M&S' in new Christmas ad

Aldi shoppers praised the supermarket’s marketing team for this year’s Christmas advertisement after spotting a cheeky swipe at rival Marks & Spencer.

The supermarkets were loggerheads after M&S took legal action against the German retailer, claiming Aldi’s Cutherbert the Caterpiller cake is too similar to their Colin the Caterpillar.

This year, Aldi made a parody to a Christmas classic movie, Home Alone, and recreated the festive scenes with Kevin the carrot as the main character.

While being stuck at home, Kevin tuned in to watch what fans presumed to be the upcoming World Cup, as Aldi mentioned a “football match in December” in their teaser advert earlier.

Aldi’s Christmas advert saw Kevin the carrot missing his plane to Paris and left home alone

Just when viewers got to see what’s playing on Kevin’s phone screen, some eagle-eyed fans noticed it’s a match between team “Cuth” and team “Col” – with “Cuth” winning 1-0.

One fan commented on YouTube: “Love the Cuthbert and Colin cake rivalry in the football match Kevin is watching!”

“Tell me I’m not the only one who noticed the football teams? Cuth 1-0 Col.” a second wrote.

Fans noticed the football teams playing on the screen as a subtle dig at M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar

“Haha, the football – as in Cuthbert vs Colin!” a third also shared.

The adventures of Kevin the Carrot went on with him making a “battle plan” to evade a burglar.

The snowman scene at the end saw Kevin making a “hasty exit to become a snowman’s nose” – but he landed much lower on the snowman’s body.

Some fans said the ‘snowman’s nose’ scene might not be appropriate for family viewing

“Is this an 18+ advert? Explain yourself Aldi,” one said while another wrote: “Aldi never fail to deliver. Subtle, but genius. My immature mind giggled.”

A person commented: “It’s a little bit of dark humour for those old enough to understand.”

But many said Aldi has the ‘warmest’ Christmas advertment among others this year

Adam Zavalis, Marketing Director at Aldi UK, said: “Christmas celebrates the joy of being with loved ones and this year more than ever we all need a bit of light entertainment as we celebrate the season together.

“And it wouldn’t be the festive season without Kevin the Carrot on our TV screens, and this year’s Yuletide performance is sure to get the nation shouting ‘KEVIN!’ as we welcome him back for the seventh year.”
